My left eye is my natural master eye, but I trained myself to shoot with my right eye so I can shoot with both eyes open.

Took quite a while, and a lot of problems, but it's worth it.

I also don't have to press my nose against the back of the camera now ;D

That's one of the most interesting remarks I've read here. Are you able to explain what changes in your composition? Subject's position in frame, more center weighted, or even what you decide to photograph? I ask because my digital pics are usually very different from my film pics. Digitals are more spontaneous, numerous, light, colorful and detailed. Could it be the same type of issue with left eye/right eye?

It's a little strange when I shift between my left and right eye. I shoot predominantly with my right eye because keeping both eyes open helps me focus better. I have to close my left eye first to orient my right eye, after that I keep both open for focusing/composing.

There's a noticeable shift when I use my left eye. The entire view through the viewfinder becomes much darker, it could be the distance I keep to prevent my nose from bumping into the camera. But with the dimmer view I keep my eye at a higher distance effectively looking at the bottom of the frame.
So when I use my left eye to compose theres a noticeable difference in the photos. I tend to center the subject square in the middle regardless of focal length (35mm & 50mm) and I tend to tilt the camera closer to the ground. I'm also more likely to shoot brighter or more contrast subjects to help with the focusing.


I wish I had some pictures to compare with. I'll try to keep in mind next time I'm shooting. I'll do a left eye vs right eye comparison.

I use only my left eye with all my cameras, not only Leica M. I use also my left eye with my Weihrauch HW 77 airgun.

I thought this was a fascinating question. I mostly shoot left-eye (right-handed), but recently I have become more interested in seeing out of the non-shooting eye, so I have had to switch. Now I am trying to learn to shoot with my right eye, with the left eye open taking in the rest of the scene, and my right hand, finger on the trigger, well out of my field of view.

The camera that got me thinking about this was a Vitomatic II with its fabulous, bright, 1:1 rangefinder.

But anyway, here's a test for eye dominance. Turns out it doesn't have anything to do with right or left handedness.
