I stockpiled Legacy Pro as it was being discontinued. Now as the stock is starting to run low and the wife gets space back in her freezer I need to switch to an equivalent film. Is there a close cousin or heir apparent? My instincts tell me it is similar in characteristics to HP5 but hoping for a more economical alternative.

Danwilly,

Sorry I cannot answer your question but was wondering how you process this film (time, temperature, agitiation, EI)? I just recently finished a roll myself and I don't usually use it. I exposed it at EI 200.

HP5 and tri-x both should make you happy.
They are about the same price and have a similar speed and look to Neopan 400 (my opinion and many others opinion).

As far as i can find, there is not a "bargain" film sold in the US that is truly iso 400.
I like the Edu-400 (foma400)film from Freestyle but it's really not 400 never mind pushing it to 1600 which HP5 and Tri-x do well enough.
The edu-400 is cheap though and looks pretty nice at 200. It's not hard to like it try some out

Here is Foma 400 If you are interested,..follow this link back to flickr, I have a 5000pix wide version to view.
