Waiting on Maitani
I am quite impressed with how Annie Leibovitz photographed Her Majesty and family on the occasion of Elizabeth's 90th birthday. I am especially taken with the picture of Elizabeth and Princess Anne. There is just something about that shot.

She's got a good team. But it's good to see that her work is continuing to impress, and she's not just coasting on her name.

Pedestrian photos, but that doesn't mean that the subjects are not charming.

The portrait on the steps looks very ungainly and awkward to my eye, when she is only halfway up she is neither up nor down.
I don't find the subjects charming and I'm not at all charmed by these pictures. A very tough assignment no doubt. I'm sure the vast majority who see it will think it wonderful and how it makes these beastly people seem 'almost human'.

I wondered how long it would take for something like this to show up.

Nice family portraiture in extremely refined, muted colours that resemble the chromatic appearance of old paintings.
Having said that, and wishing Mrs. Windsor a happy anniversary, I think it is high time UK abolishes this monarchic nonsense. This is highly counter educative for young generations.

I am not sure about Ms Leibovitz work here. The best one is the group with the great grand children. The shot of the Queen and Princess Anne does not work for me as the random hand appearing from the Queen's side looks just odd and is one of my pet hates in any portrait.

- Yes, sort of, but it is a barter: they rule and you don't pay the taxes.

These photographs made me immediatly think of the portrait drawings - and paintings - by Ingres: the painted portrait of Mme. Moitessier from the National Gallery London (the mirrors in the background) and the priceless pencil drawing of the family of Lucien Bonaparte from the Fogg Art Museum in Cambridge Massachusetts.

Yes, I liked the treatment of colour.

If I'm not mistaken the British monarchy does not rule, rather reigns. But yes, they are supported by taxation.

That on-line reproduction doesn't fully reflect the composition,or the quality, of the picture; like those in some UK national newspapers it is cropped, and has lost definition, brightness and shadows detail. The standard I am using for comparison is a large reproduction in a recently new paperI am quite impressed with how Annie Leibovitz photographed Her Majesty and family on the occasion of Elizabeth's 90th birthday. Not exactly taxation as a 'one-way' deal. They essentially gave up their private resources for the service of the nation, in exchange for the Civil List.SNIP If I'm not mistaken the British monarchy does not rule, rather reigns. But yes, they are supported by taxation.

what?
Always love her light and the somewhat magical feeling to her group portraits.
Would like to see a nice large print, face-to-face, of that first photo.

The RFF does like to bash Annie. Her success is just an evil trick.
