Leica 28 Elmarit ASPH woble..........

Has anyone else had this issue..?
The 28 Elmarit ASPH, from the aperture dial to the front of the lens, that whole center section wobbles.. Seems like something in there loosened up in the past 2 days..
Any idea on cost to repair.? Through Leica NJ, or Sherry.

So, did some poking around.

That metal ring was loose.. I was able to tighten it with my fingers, since it has that edge.. will grab a spanner wrench at work tomorrow and hand tighten..

Does anyone now if there is anything that prevents this from loosening , or is it just hand tight from the factory? I would send it in if it is something more than tightening with a spanner...

Im guessing, since the hood attaches to that center piece, attaching the lens etc. using the hood, instead of the body, might have loosened the whole thing.. or not..

If you're afraid it might loosen again, you could always take it off, and apply some BLUE thread locker. That should hold it. Then take care when you take the lens off the camera to grab it from the barrel, instead of the hood.

Rings are typically only hand tightened. I don't like thread locker on rings because they are often thin, distort easily and with thread locker, you can't remove the ring easily, the next time you need to remove it.

I suggest carefully hand-tigntening the ring.

Is the lens new? Any warranty left?

I bought a new lens (Elmarit 28/2.8) about a year ago. When I opened the box I noticed that the front filter ring was loose. I could rotate the sun-shade if I mounted it. I guess someone forgot to glue it at the factory...

After some telephone calls to Leica I returned the lens and got a new perfect lens from the dealer at no cost.

My advice is that you should contact Leica. Do nor try to repair it yourself. You could damage it and make it worth-less or void any warranty.

With some luck they will perhaps repair or adjust your lens at a minimal cost if your warranty is not valid any longer.

No warranty, expired a few years ago.. There is nothing I could mess up, worse case, it will stay the same.
The center part where the hood attaches to, goes all the way back and to the rear element.. There is one ring holding that whole center section in place, if you were to twist the hood to pull the lens off, eventually it seems like you will loosen that ring...
I think thats what happened..
Hold onto the lens and not the hood when changing lenses...

Never carry the 28/2 with the hood on, upside down.

That's what causes it.

the case takes the lens and hood.

first, you should never leave the hood on, period.

but, if you do, be sure it's on top, with no weight on it.

My tech explained the issue to me, famous somebody or other.

I see.. Not sure if there is any difference between the summicron and elmarit in terms of the case, but ill keep that in mind..

Sounds like you'll be fine with hand tightening. I swap that hood between the 35/2 and the 28/2.8 ASPH. I have never gripped the hood for lens mounting but still had a problem with my 35/2: the lens started wobbling on the mount. The whole mounting flange was loose. I tightened the screws, no blue Loctite, and some years later it's just as firm. I left the hood on the 35/2 nearly all the time. Now I have the 28 and have it in a bag all the time I cap it and keep the hood loose. It isn't much trouble.
