Leica 35mm summicron v3 aperture ring shift

Hi,

The ring on my aperture ring of my 35mm Cron shifted, as can be seen on the picture:

I honestly don't know how it got this way and I was wondering if anyone knows how to get it right again? There's three teeny-tiny screws in the aperture ring, could that have something to do with it?

My v3 does this too. Check the rear element retainer ring. It's probably slightly loose. I haven't bothered sending mine in, as I just turn the aperture ring back into place by hand.

Thanks for explaining. Which one is the retaining ring?
I just noticed my hood is slanted too (I'm guessing at the same angle as the aperture ring).

Your 'cron is the version 4, which has a build-quality history. The front section is glued, and can separate if sufficient force is applied (like mounting the lens via the hood).

Wow. I always thought it was a v3, but upon closer inspection it does seem to be a v4 indeed. I didn't know they were also made in Canada. Lucky me I guess.

I read up upon the problem and it looks like the front element is held into place with glue (instead of screws). I guess trying to twist it back is only going to make matters worse.

I mounted it on my M8 and the photos are sharp, though I wouldn't know if they're less sharp.

What would you advise? If I send it it in, would a different/better kind of glue be used so it wouldn't come lose again?

Personally, I would let sleeping dogs lie if the images are sharp across the frame. My version 4 is unsharp on one side, which is a bit annoying. Fortunately, I own a pair of Summicrons version 3 that I prefer. 🙂
