Call me old school. I just want a bare bones B&W digital with the least amount of features. The more it is like a M6 the better. Simple is good, less switches is better, and only the basics. Raw only please. I never use exposure compensation because I'll just adjust ISO.
If I wanted a video camera I'd look elsewhere, but I also know as a consumer I pay more for food without added salt or persevatives.

Im not sure if there will be a significant upgrade to the M system.
If there was one however, the LCD technology is way beyond anyone on this forum. Camera can be thinner, more efficient and still retain the LCD. Heck they may even include a mechanical back LCD cover to offer a streamlined look. or make it an optional accessory for $699
I think the real announcement will be to the X system or the S system. A smaller, faster and more efficient version of S2 perhaps, much like the nikon D800E

While I love the M9, I love color, and I actually like chimping... I can honestly see the appeal in this. I love stripped down objects that just get to the point. I would say that half the people using film use it because they like film cameras better than digital (as opposed to using film for its unique properties). If Leica can make a camera that is more like its film cameras and surpass the benchmark set by the Epson in this regard, they could have a niche winner. Of all of the companies out there, Leica is in the position to do this and succeed. Remember, unlike most other camera manufactuers, Leica can make money while not having to sell huge volume.

most of the features that annoy traditionalists (am guessing that e.g. video and live view) can be turned off, and never touched again. put tape over LCD or buy Luigi case that comes with cover for it. buy smallest possible memory card that fills up fast like a roll of film. experience would not be far from M7

There are pretty obvious technical reasons why this is impossible.
The front-to-sensor distance is fixed (lens register has to be 27.8 mm to be compatible with M lenses).
The sensor-to-back distance is always going to be bigger than with a film M, simply because the package "sensor assembly plus circuit board plus body shell" is necessarily thicker than the package "film plus back door"
In other words, there will never be a digital M that is as thin as a film M.

Why pay for things that will never be used? What I'm thinking that Leica is known for its elegance. I like shooting film because of the implied simplicity.
Also stated that I would be willing to pay more for less. Also if Leica built the right camara that had the elegance I require that I would likely buy two.
Also thinking long-term if I have a camera that suits my needs perfectly without any uneeded frills ther would be no need for any upgrade.

What they should produce is an "RFF Speculation Edition" run of 10 units with a color sensor, 10 units black and white sensor, 10 with mechanical shutter cocking lever, 10 with mechanical shutter cocking knurled knob, 10 with a MASSIVE LCD screen, 10 with about 20-30 knobs all over it to control all the menu functions directly, and instead of being powered by electricity from a battery it will be powered by Leica magic.
I'm sure I missed a few there but it's all in good fun.

Honestly I think the number one nut for Leica to crack is the high iso performance. If they can do that then everything else is gravy. The M8 was obviously: let's get something out the door! The M9: let's get full frame out the door! Now they've had a few years to work on it, I expect they'll have worked out a lot of the kinks.
If they can offer a b&w only version for, say, $1000 more, I expect they will sell enough for it to be profitable. People buy the M9-P for $1000 more...

My curiosity has gotten the best of me.
What is the perceived advantage of having a sensor with a native ISO of 25 or 50. By native ISO I mean an ISO that simply does not attenuate the signal, but actually records data at ISO 25.
Current cameras with native ISOs of 200 will operate at ISO 100 using attenuation. The dynamic range and IQ is reduced.

I was thinking a chrome M9P before this thread started. I'd have to sell a lot of gear, but that would be a good thing. Thought I was a die-hard B&W film guy, but now I look upon digital as a different/seperate medium as an opportunity for growth and a personal challenge.
Having better high ISO performance would be a game changer for me and it wouldn't have to be that high, perhaps 1250 or 1600.

I think it would be a game changer for a LOT of people. It seems to be the #1 criticism of the digital Ms. I think that if they could get previous generation high iso performance, a la 5d2 or d3/700, and a low 20s sensor, a lot of people would go for it, and they'd sell more than they every would with the M9. I would try to find a way to make it happen, if it were priced the same as the M9. Folks may complain about the lcd, but really that's at the bottom of the list. I just hope they don't use the same battery again!

They could have designed the M8 and M9 with the same thickness body as the classic M's if they would have built a 2-3mm long snout on the lens mount. I've always wondered why they didn't do this, probably they used some standard parts for the shutter mechanism that needed the space. But, it is possible to build a digital M with the same body thickness as a classic film M, if you don't consider the lens mount part of the thickness, I know it could feel like the classic ones. Bob.
