Leica Day in Chicago (June 5th)

For those who live in the area (or the ones who may be interested), my favorite store, Central Camera in Wabash Ave is hosting a "Photography Fair" this coming Saturday, June 5th. In case you want to play with nice gear (and probably buy it at a discount), there are representatives from Nikon, Canon, Sigma and every name under the earth on hand (except, probably, CV), peddling their wares. You can confirm it by clicking here, the Leica USA website. Just scroll down until you see "Chicago" under the "Place" column.

To top it all, you can go to this candy store to get some gear or film and use it right away: the Printer's Fair will be going full throttle on Dearborn Street, across Congress. Nice place for people shots and book buying! See you there! 😀

Francisco, did you get the chance to go look around? I just saw that they are doing a demo day at B&H July 30th. (I bet that will be a zoo.) How much are the discounts? I have heard anywhere from 25 to 33%. That is between $675 and $900 on an MP.

I did go and play with a nice pair of Leica lenses: a 24mm and a long and unwieldy 135mm piece. The catch was no tax on Leica day; I can't say if anyone bought bodies or glass, but a man from Iowa City did buy a SF20 flash unit.

A "Leica Day" in B&H? Go for it! You'll get to play with those cameras and talk shop to the Leica representative. I played a bit with an MP body, but what I like about these things is trying other lenses, so I carry my Leica loaded, switch lenses and shoot some symbolic frames in the store. Good luck!

The B&H demo day is the day after my wife's birthday, so I have to make sure appropriate plans for that event are taken care of before I take a trip to the big city.

I don't know Francisco. She never has an excited look on her face when there is a box from B&H or Adorama sitting on the door step when she gets home.

I am very frustrated though right now as the only camera I own with an acurate meter is my Hasselblad (it always reads the same, "You tell me"). This is not exactly a bad thing as I am now carrying my hand held meter with me everywhere, but...

My plan has been to wait until after the big fall photoshow to see what new things may be on the horizon, and I will fight the urge to do something before then. Although I have had orders all filled out, and internet shopping carts full with many things, including an M4-p and MP (one of those what the heck, it's only money moments).

anything i should know about?
i hope to drop off my first roll of transparency film this afternoon so i will know more about my own meter soon.

She is showing a stop or two under exposure. It just started happening recently, and from what I know this is not a common problem with the R's. I asked on the CVUG. I changed the batteries so I know that isn't the issue.

Most recent example. I went for a walk along the shore Friday at lunch and took some shots. It was a solid overcast, and the meter was calling for a true "sunny 16." I just sent that roll in so I should be able to tell shortly what was right, the meter or my correction. But, being print film I may not be able to tell the difference by the prints.

Good reason to carry a separate hand-held meter, applicable to any camera with manual exposure settings. Indeed I've been eying eBay auctions for another as a "spare."

I bought a Sekonic 308 b when I bought my Hasselblad, and yes, it has never steered me wrong.

Like I said, I don't think the Bessa meter is an issue in general. Mine is just having some issues that we need to work out.
