Leica digital promo pictures

Leica just sent out a newsletter with a link to photographs taken with the DMR by Gunter Osterloh. I downloaded the "Bali Girl" file and my first reaction was astonishment at the sharpness and detail in the photograph. Leica couldn't have found a better photograph to show off the DMR or its 100mm macro - it is of the highest quality. I hope the digital M provides the same high quality.

I suggest loading the photo into Photoshop and sizing it to "Actual Pixels". The bokeh, at least for this picture, is perfect.

Both of Osterloh's photographs show some loss of highlight detail - very noticable in the dancers on the right in the second photograph, "Bali Dancing Group".

Old IT joke that may be applicable here:

A technician, working alone, accidentally receives a huge electric shock and finds himself lying helpless on the floor. Suddenly a shining Being appears.

"These are your last moments on Earth," says the Being. "Now you must choose whether you want to go to Heaven or Hell."

"Can I have a look at the options first?" says the technician. "Certainly," says the Beiing, making an expansive gesture. "First, this is Heaven."

"You have chosen," says the Being, gesturing again. Suddenly the technician finds himself up to his nostrils in boiling lava. The stench of sulfur is everywhere, and horrid-looking creatures are poking him with pitchforks.

"Wait a sec!" shouts the technician. "What happened to the beach? What happened to the beer and liquor? What the heck happened to the dancing girls?"

"That was the demo," says the Being, and vanishes.

That's exactly right, camera company promo photo's are meant to SEDUCE! Can't you feel the slinky, expensive, shiny black tendrils of a DMR wrapping themselves around your pocket book right now? My sneaky, sly soul searcher senses an impending GAS ATTACK! Confess! Confess! You really like the "Bali Girl"! 🙂

That's exactly right, camera company promo photo's are meant to SEDUCE! Can't you feel the slinky, expensive, shiny black tendrils of a DMR wrapping themselves around your pocket book right now?

Not as long as it's attached to (bleah) an SLR!

Even if they had cobbled this digital camel onto an RF camera instead, I'd still be skeptical. Having lived through the era of the original Leica Winder M -- including my particular example back to Leica three times for them to try to get it to work with my M-4P, which they never did (I finally took after it with a screwdriver and got it to work about 90% of the time) I remain a bit skeptical of Leica's ability to connect the knee-bone to the thigh-bone, despite the elegance of the individual components...

I think Leica assumes, correctly, that professionals or advanced amateurs looking for high quality will be shooting the DMR (or digital M). That is probably why Leica chose to use TIFF and DNG (Adobe digital negative) examples. The DNG/RAW format is especially helpful because it gives photographers a chance to look at the unaltered output from the camera.
