leica diopter question

I recently read that leica viewfinders are set to -5 normally. If I buy a leica brand corrective diopter does the value on the box represent the diopter strength of the corrective lens alone or the total correction with the -5 already factored in?

I wear -1 glasses normally, so I either need a -.5 or a -1 depending. Which should I get?

The -0.5 is for people with perfect vision. Get -1 for yourself. But remember any astigmatism must be taken into acount too.

It must be factored in, otherwise why would there be a -0.5 diopter made if the OEM eyepiece is already a -0.5? Buy the same diopter as your prescription, unless you have astigmatism and then ask your optician what your "spherical equivalent" is (usually it's one more diopter minus than your prescription for nearsighted people).

Now some more confusion: If you also wear bifocals, you might want to choose a diopter that reprsents your correction for about 3 meters. You'll be a little fuzzy at longer and a little too sharp at closer subject distances but it's a fair all-around compromise. Unlike an SLR where everything's focused on a single plane, looking thru an M Leica finder is like real-life in that one correction may not suffice for all distances if you're beyond the single-vision years.
