Does anyone know of any camera manufacturers that make diopters that'll fit the M Leicas? I might have to bite the bullet and pay the rediculous price for the Leica one, but thought I would put it out there.

Thanks in Advance,

Joel

Hi Joel,

I use HK Supplies on eBay for that. Quick ship, works fine.
I use Megapearls for eyepiece magnifiers, but they have changed their name and I don't recall it now. Very helpful, very responsive.

When I was in the market for diopters for my Leica, I remember that I had to do a couple of searches on eBay to find them. I don't recall the issue now, but my point is try it several ways -- by supplier, by product, etc.

Good luck.

Giorgio

You might have to bite the bullet then :)

Personally I haven't done an exhaustive search but what I've found is no one has managed to equal the quality of Leica - and as far as I'm concerned, the eyepiece is one of the more critical areas not to skimp on. I do have a couple of megapearls magnifiers with variable correction but here you can't get the correction without the magnification. That being said, they're fine accessories as well.

This is a useful thread for information on substitutes. I didn't look hard enough and bought the Leica diopter, which in my case makes a HUGE difference in the focussing experience, and I am very satisfied with the Leica product. It plays well with the 1.25x and 1.4x magnifiers for 50mm and longer lenses too. Like all Leica equipment, quality comes at a very high price.

You can sometimes find them used at KEH. I found a Leica 1.0+, like new in the box, for $60 & I am very satisfied with it.

EDIT: I just checked & they have a 0.5+ in ex condition for $49, not a bad price for a brand name item.

Joel the one I use is a gadget from Japan Exposures (was megaperls) that has both a magnifier and built in infinite diopter adjustment from -3 to +1.5 (?). They come in magnifications of 1.15 and 1.35. I selected the 1.15 to be able to see framelines of the widest lenses on my M8. Although these are dearer than the Leica ones the big advantage is the infinite diopter adjustment as this means you do not have to buy the nearest one to what you really need then hope for the best. (Leica ones come only on half diopter adjustments.) I find the optical quality to be quite OK.

Hi all,

Thanks much for the information. Some of you might have confused diopter with magnifier. I will check Keh for used ones. That's a good idea. I have a JE magnifier and it works pretty well, but it would be nice to have a diopter added to it. Peter, your mag w/diopter sounds perfect. I'll have to revisit their site, but I don't remember seeing that. Thanks for the link. Of course, it is over 2x the price, but if I didn't already have the mag, I would likely jump on that.

Cheers,

Joel

Joel,
AFAIK Japan Exposures makes 2 magnifiers...1.15x and 1.35x. Both have the diopter adjustment. To adjust the diopter you turn the inner part once mounted on the body. Turning excessively anti-clockwise will ultimately take it apart so be careful.
