There was a recent explanation of the compression from 12 bits to 8 bits. The conclusion was the the increase in noise due to this level of compression was not detectable. I put this as a query to members of the Leica Users Group (LUG) and all who responded stated that they could not detect any image deterioration. Several also said that they used it, not to save storage space, but to make transfer to the SD card in the camera quicker.
I tried it a few days ago, and found that my DNGs went from 36.4 MB to 18.3 MB. That was cool, but when I got the camera, about a year ago, compressed DNGs ranged from around 18 to 24 MB, i.e. the size varied. The only thing that has changed was a couple of firmware updates, but according to Leica, those updates were concerned only with a problem with one brand of SD card.
Can anyone shed any light on why the earlier compression had varied degrees?
