I don't think that can be six bit coding, can it? It's an optical system and those look like electrical contacts...

Edited to say -- oh, but that's the camera side -- I guess it could have a reader on the lens side & translate that to electrical information on the camera side. And would have to. Duh.

This would be absolutely amazing. With the fuji 35 and it's aperture chatter and slow focus, this will be a life saver.
Since firmware adjustment... aperture chatter is in the past.

Oh wow. If fuji's adapter is going to have six-bit contacts, that could be very interesting.
Not to fuel the speculation, but contacts could be:
1. Six-bit coding, reading the frameline lug position, or some way of transmitting a manually set focal length into the camera.
2. Output from a simple distance encoder (feeding the DOF scale). This does not seem tremendously likely given the shallow depth of a Leica to X adapter.
3. A way for the camera to know that an M lens is attached and to adjust the color shifts/vignetting/etc.
Or it could be all of them. Or none. The inclusion of an X-mount with contacts in the picture might just be a graphic design decision.

The electrical contacts are a great tease. So is not showing about 60% of the ring.

The other two are not that "exciting" however the #2; assuming they would employ a sort of transducer in the adapter to convert the focusing cam height into an analog drive signal to operate something similar to a rangefinder for example.. but they did not provide anything for it; no provision in the design, only a CDAF-circuitry with a confirmation signal in the finder.. (Weird..)

I would be happy if all it did was detect that the focus ring was moved and then automatically engauged some form of focus assist (go to evf/enlarge or peaking, go back to ovf when you stopped). That would go a long way to making it usable. Anything else would be an absolute bonus.

The EVF is mostly useless outside with M lenses at the moment.

Do you mean OVF? EVF doesn't have frame lines... If you do actually mean OVF, you have to turn on or off a certain mode - it may be labelled as something like "shoot without lens" or something (I don't own the camera myself so can't check), but it will make the framelines go to normal brightness with an adapted lens.
Or so I believe.

Lots of excitement here, but there is nothing here to indicate anything specific. The graphic designer could have just included the back of an x-mount lens, as Dante mentioned.
If they do design a 'smart' adapter, methinks there is no problem with licensing. I'd be seriously surprised if the patent office would issue one for a 6 bit coding system.

I wonder if they will add any way to correct for cyan corners, smeary corners? I agree -- a very interesting development.

I'm not so sure that Fujifilm would be that stupid. I'm not saying you guys are wrong (it's a good point), but if they did this, there will be plenty of pissed off people.
Oh, not to worry, there are *always* plenty of pissed off people. Glad most of them hang out at dpreview and not here or fujix-forum.com. 
Fuji has to step it up with its adapter... if they just bring out another metal ring, they've already missed the boat. Of course, Fuji controls firmware updates, so they can choose to expand its manual focus capabilities at the same time its adapter is introduced. .

Right, that's true certainly. The only reason I'm even interested is to add focal lengths... since Fuji only offers three.

Not to step on any toes, but this one.
The only real improvement I see with the inclusion of M glass is real manual focusing, but that will only really be an improvement with some sort of focus confirmation addition.

The curious thing about the contact points in the graphic is that they are embedded in a black metal ring. The rings in which both the Fuji XF lens and the XP1 body are embedded are silver. Does anybody have a body or a lens that is not like that?
