Does the IIIb work in the same way as the earlier III/IIIa when doing a cleanup of the slow speed escapment? Or does it need to be further taken apart?

It's very much the same, the only difference in the IIIb is the viewfinder optics.

I cleaned mine without removing it from the body. Used lighter fluid. It used to stuck on lower speeds but its working now.

Same. Good luck with the cleaning.

Thanks, gentlemen! I'll see if I can sort it out eventually, it's the everyday camera that needs some work (1 second is a bit hiccupy).

To conclude - I got both the III and the IIIb up and running, with the nod going to the III escapment being a bit easier to get in and out.
I noticed that the IIIb escapment was differently constructed and with ball bearings in there as far as I could see.

They would be slightly different depending on the lay-out of the slow speeds on the dial.
The IIf apparently had a slow speed gear as well, to manage the 1/25th setting.
