Hi all, I have done a bunch of lurking on this site (and many others) in preparation for opening up the iiif that I acquired recently. There is such a wealth of knowledge here!

In any event, the camera has good overall cosmetics, but was intermittently sticking on some of the high and low speed settings. After much preparation and photographic documentation, I was able to quite easily remove the body panel, along with the cover under the lens ring. I am going to clean out the bits of debris, dust etc. and do a sparing lube of the moving parts, including a clean of the slow speed escapement.

The thing I noticed was that, with the "outsides" off, the fast speeds other than 1000 seem to be working properly. The other thing I noticed is that when the speed dial is adjusted, it lifts up, rotates, then positively seats down into the proper setting for every speed, except for the 1000. For this speed, it only settles part way down and does not release properly. I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue or not? I imagine I will have to remove the top cover to get into this location as well.

Thanks in advance

Regards,

Clinton

Ok just checked my iiic and the dial does the same thing at 1000 (except that it works). Hopefully a clean up will do the trick!

Clinton -

My IIIf BD does the same, the dial at 1000 seems to settle half-way down, but it does fire correctly. I assume you know to have the shutter cocked before adjusting the shutter speeds...

I checked my Canon IVsb (which is a Leica clone) and it does the same at 1/1000. Also works fine.

This is normal, and an intentional part of the design, for it not to set as far down at 1000 as it does on the other speeds. See page 6 of the instruction manual per OrphanCameras.

No insight to your problem, but there is a PDF of the full service manual for the IIIf on the net that you should search out if you haven't already. If you can't find it, I think I have it on a harddrive somewhere - PM and I see if I can find it.

You need look no further than the Members Only subforum.

Thanks all for the input. I did a rinse and blow out with lighter fluid and magically the shutter started working. A (very) light lubrication with light oil and it worked nicely for about 20 shots before hanging up again. I'll do another rinse and clean and see if it will work dry.

The reason for the slightly raised position at 1/1000 is that the 500 and 1000 holes in the control disc are so close together that there isn't room for the full hole diameter for both. Therefore the 1000 hole is slightly smaller and the pin won't set all the way down through the disc as it does for the other speeds.
