now here is my dilema- yesterday i came across a beauty of a iiig with a 50/2.8 elmar collapsible. beautiful looking, curtains look soft and supple, shutter sounds good. rangefinder clear and bright. the lens could use a cleaning. the vulcanite, ah the vulcanite. i could see some reglued small pieces around the slow speed dial. anyway,
i couldn't pass it up and took it home. of course closer at home inspection reveals the vulcanite loosening- its all intact except for the small pieces mentioned above; so i might be able to make it look good, and strengthen it, with some careful attempt at getting some adhesive under the vulcanite.
or, should i just send it off and get a new cover?
would it be wiser to keep the original vul. in place, and if it chips and flakes, let them fall where they may?
whichever way i decide, i know this is going to be a very fun camera to use.
oh yeah, it is from a december 1959 production.

I had DAG redo my IIIg last month. YOU CANNOT TELL IT FROM THE ORIGINAL!
I am 100 percent pleased with it - total turnaround was 1 week delivered. He has a special jig for the IIIg. Email me and i can send you photos etc. Dilema solved.

Are you going to use it? If so, get whatever covering strikes your fancy from Camera Leather.

Or did you buy it as a collectible? If so, I'd send it DAG.

its too nice not to use, and i'll send it to dag as well.
while i have "three to few" i definitely have more that i can use- basically i buy them to use them.
i'm going to make some things available in the classifieds pretty soon.

The IIIg is a splendid camera, certainly worth getting recovered. The 50mm/2.8 Elmar ain't no slouch either.

Even though they have a recovering service, I found it very easy to apply the cameraleather.com covering myself on my IIIc. Just ordered another for my M5.

I got an M2 with some missing vulcanite, in fact the entire piece of the back door, some square centimeters elsewhere and some minor chipping. After getting it, I bought new cloths from cameraleather. But, I have not bothered to put it on yet! I just use the camera and I am happy with it!

So, enjoy your iiig and have a little patience before you decide what to do with it.
