I finally got my filters today:

I have a Carl Zeiss 35mm Biogon lens and I have found that the filter whilst it fits only needs a very small amount of seating.

If that doesn't make sense I mean that it appears as though the filter should screw in much more than it appears it should.

Can anyone re assure me that theirs is the same.

Thanks

Might have a burr on the threads. Either the filter or the lens. Try a tiny amount of oil to see if it breaks loose. Tiny amount!

I just received a Leica silver 43mm UV/IR filter recently and had exactly the same problem with it on my biogon - doesn't screw on properly. I was using a 43mm B+W on the biogon and it screwed in smoothly without problems. I have the feeling QC with these Leica branded filters is poor. Mine was manufactured in Japan, but I don't know which company.

I have a Biogon 35 and a 43mm B+W filter which screws in smoothly all the way. I have 46mm Leica and B+W filters to go with Leica and VC lenses, and no problems either. I don't have a Zeiss lens to try the Leica filter.

I received my Leica IR filters today and agree the fit on the Zeiss 35 is strange. The threads must not match, although it does align and screw in enough to be secure.

I cannot speak about modern filters but I can say that a number of years ago I found a set of original (1950s/60s) red, yellow and orange Zeiss filters of 40.5mm diameter. As I had a Summarit (which has a 41mm diameter filter mount) acting on a hunch I bought them. They were well priced sitting in a bargain bin. By rights they should not fit at all and admittedly they were quite loose as you first began to screw them on, but when they were fully screwed in, they cinched up tight into a perfect fit. I think from memory that other 40.5 mm filters have not worked in the same way. So maybe the thread pitch is slightly different????

My Leica 46mm filter fits perfectly on my ZM Biogon 21mm The Leica 43mm goes in about 1/2 a thread on the Biogon 35mm and then jams. A B+W 486 fits perfectly. I measured the thread diameter of the Leica, the B+W and a Schneider with a digital micrometer.

Leica 42.823mm
B+W 42.771mm
Schneider 42.773mm

That is a big enough discrepancy to stop the filter screwing properly.

It is difficult to compare the thread pitches visually as the Leica is Silver (their only option) and the other two black but I think they are the same 0.75M.

Leica were going to change the 43mm for me anyway as I had changed my order but the original order got sent. The leica filter also has a blob of black paint from the logo painting on the glass. My 43mm filter is winging its way back to Ms Schwanzara as I write this. I look forward to receiving a 60mm filter for my Noctilux.
