Leica is back at Wetzlar

Just like the Midland Leicas,
the Solms marked Leicas will eventually be considered collectible.

So do Carl Zeiss and Jena, but that's long over. At this point I don't know where Zeiss is located. (It's really just the Stiftung -- they don't actually make anything themselves anymore, right?)

I'll settle for Leica being anywhere, so long as they're still in business.

They make lots of things -- high-end lenses mostly in Oberkochen, and their high-end binos (AFAIK) are still made in the old Hensoldt factory in Wetzlar  ...

Carl Zeiss AG in Oberkochen and Carl Zeiss GmbH in Jena and Heidenheim.

Anyone got a google maps/earth link to the new plant ?

I´didn´t look. But the building and the place is quite new. In Former times (3-4 years ago?) it was a military aera. It is near the "Autobahn" (motorway) exit no 31 of the A45/E41 (exit Wetzlar Süd/Münchholzhausen) .

it is imho not the problem. The "Leica" brand doesn´t belong to Leica Camera AG but imho to Leica Microsystems. It is only left over on certain conditions (remember the black Leica spot story) . With the use of the "Leitz-Wetzlar" brand Leica Camera avoids some problems (and the licence fee ? ;) ). The use of Leitz-Wetzlar needs a production in Wetzlar.

That old building turned out alot of stuff that made alot of pictures.

Leica Schule 1986. I spent a week with Walter Heun and it is still one of the coolest things in my life.

I like the shot of the woman working on a camera, with a Peanuts comics calendar on her desk. It gives such a personal feeling to the scene and to the cameras.
