I have an Elmarit. I have had it for 26 years. I see no reason to upgrade to an Aspherical. I love the way this lens "draws" an image. I think you would too.

Doug here has a 28 ASPH I believe. I am sure he will chime in soon, he is on the left coast. You're probably not interested but I use a Hexanon-M 28. That's a good lens too. 🙂

I have a 28 Summicron ASPH and have never been sorry that I got it. I do not have the Elmarit though so I can not compare the two. Some of the images in my gallery were shot with this lens as well. For wide shots it is the first lens that I reach for above anything else in my bag. The amount of detail stopped down is just incredible as well. The depth field opened up matches the type of shots I like to grab as well. The out of focus areas should please anyone and have never seen anything bad about the lens in that. I mostly shoot B&W as well so my perspective is from there. I just started shooting some high speed Delta 3200 with this lens and am looking forward to the results. Go with Summicron for the extra stop. You will be using this indoors as you said.

I second Peter's assessment ... if you can live with 2.8, the Hexanon-m is exceptional in build, quality, sharpness, and has a very impressive signature. A good sample can be had for $700-$850 based on condition.

Takes 46mm filters.

here's a shot from mine that was taken wide open at f2.8. Actually its a test shot so I could look at the OOF areas both in front of and behind the plane of focus. Sorry for the blown highlight in the sky - I'm a lousy scanner...

Thanks again Tom! I really like the lens although I now have a 24 that I'm warming up to a lot. We should probably stop hijacking the thread as I'm sure Leica_Magus really wants a Leica lens...

Hi, Magus -- Similarly to you I poked around reading about both lenses because at that point I'd eliminated everything else for various reasons such as size and optical quality. I got the idea that the 'cron was slightly superior optically, but even if it's slightly the other way I'd go for it just for the extra stop without any penalty in bulk. I got my 28 'cron last May. I've shot a roll of Pan-F and one of Tri-X, neither of which have been scanned... and one roll of Fuji Neopan CN, and as it happens I left an orange filter on the lens that ran the contrast out of sight for most shots. Oh well, here are a couple of samples...
