50mm C-Sonnar f 1.5
This is a piece of glass that I have at home that dates back perhaps to the mid-nineties. It is infused with silver and the smoke-like shape in the glass is a rich pink color. Mike is also a photographer, working in Medium Format, Tri-X and HC-110 rarely printing larger than 8x10. His images are rich in texture and reflect an understanding of light and his medium of B&W Gel Silver beautifully.
David
That glass is beautiful as is your image.

Thank you Allen! Mike's work got more interesting after 9/11 He did a very cool series of obelisk-like figures with several on a base and in a row, each with a unique shape creating a sort of skyline. Very architectural but beautifully controlled and delicate. Just retired he is looking to do some more medium format.....8x10s

Expose for the highlights -- pretend you have slide film in the camera. Shoot DNG. Enjoy.

I agree with what Vince said....the Monochrom can reach into shadows very well...but once a highlight is blown....
Also...do not let the initial output deter you. It can look rather flat at first, but this camera really has a lot of latitude for PP. Shoot like it's chrome (slide), post process like it's film.
Enjoy it....I think the M9M produces some of the most unique output from any digital camera.
Oh! also consider getting a thumb grip for the hot shoe. It adds a bit of stability / security when handling IMO.

Welcome Helen! I bet this thread is about to get some new life with your contributions. The M9M should be a perfect companion for you. Vince's advice is good, of course. Looking forward to seeing what you see through that finder

I like this thread (even if I have no mono M) because of so many good photos here. I'm sure Helen's contribution will be excellent and make this thread even more interesting and dangerous ...(I do not need one more camera!).

Hi Helen,
finally
You will have to learn interpreting the histogram and check for the highlights. Don't be scared though ... I have seen people shooting with -2 correction all the time, no matter what and up with underexposed images. Expose "to the right", i.e. catch as much light as possible but not as much as on BW negative film
I recommend to have a light yellow filter on the lens all the time. It definately helps to protect the highlights and increases contrast just a little. You have to put in some effort with the MM to get the basis for best image quality at time of exposure. How the final image will look like is a matter of your post processing preferences. I am curious how you will like the digital bw output compared to the character of analog film.
Enjoy the ride, always here to help.
