Leica M Monochrom: best pics

Hi Matt,
the width of the second picture is a little big, so only after scrolling to the right, I saw the "main part".
Somehow her face does look a little artificial to me (too much sharpening or "clarity"?) otherwise fantastic composition and great light on her face.

As for the "clarity slider" in LR4.2, the Leica guy at the Monochrome workshop mentioned he always
stays below a value of 15, otherwise you get get an artificial look with MM files, just a thought...
 
Had my second short walk with the M Mono - bad mood, no mojo, was approached by some thug lowering the level further … maybe tomorrow then:

I had planned for testing how a few old lenses work with the MM sensor a 1936 3.5cm Elmar and a late collapsible 50 Summicron.
Whoever writes all over the internet that the old uncoated 3.5cm Elmar is a dog never saw files from a MM with one ;-)

Btw - I have never shot a digital camera before that can handle full shadow detail AND the rising sun straight into the lens behind the skyline of Shanghai at the Bund - props to Kodak and Leica!

I was actually surprised, how much detail this often criticized lens shows on the MM!
 
Man, this is a very interesting thread for a number of reasons!

In terms of the kit or gear itself, what I am seeing shows qualities that are, subjectively speaking, sometimes more or less preferable to film. There is no question, however, that the MM is one of those cameras that is capable of reliably producing images that are distinct in terms of the 'look'. More so than any digital M camera to date save the M8 (precisely due to its 'flaws').

For that reason alone, much as I am deeply attracted to one, I prefer to recognize in the stratospheric price a measure of respect for the craft. Of all the M cameras, this is the one that really calls for use by gifted seers. I'm definitely NOT one of those.

Inevitably, the unique qualities of the MM will translate into a certain sought-after cachet. Oh well, whattya gonna do?

By contrast, a camera like the DP2M, which is also capable of reliably producing unique images, is the sort of camera that really makes sense (cents?!) for an enthusiast amateur like me who just wants to document the (slow-moving) milieu.

I will come back often to visit this thread and relish in what people are doing, hoping that the level of interest may eventually translate into a wider application of the monochrome idea at an affordable (for me) price point.
 
Got my Monochrom back. Here with the ZM Planar 50/2. It's so good against flare. The reflection you do see is most likely due to the filter I was too lazy to remove.

Beautiful light to almost sculpture her profile, great shot Kristian.
I shoot my planar without filter but this little flare doesn't take away anything.

Thank you so much for posting these images shot with Nikon single coated glass. I own a 35/1.8 Nikkor in LTM that very much inspires me. Can't wait till I get my Monochrome delivery.

I am a sucker for fantastic 35mm lenses and have found some kind of satisfaction with the UC-Hex for now, but that Nikkor ;-)

I am very lucky to have a clean one. Only 1500 ever made in LTM. It displays wonderfully detailed contrast in B&W on film. I only speculated that it might be a magic lens on a Monochrome.

Cal, I'd be very curious, how it looks on the MM sensor - once you have the chance to try it out on the MM, please post some samples here!

I'm new to digital, I don't scan, but getting a MM will change everything. I'm pretty sure the 35/1.8 Nikkor will be a magic lens on a Monochrome. I'm pretty sure if you love the 50/1.4 Nikkor that you will also love the 35/1.8.

Currently I'm number 13 on a waiting list. Expected delivery???

Cal, I am most curious - hope, you get through the waiting fast ;-)

For the current going rate of the Nikkor 35/1.8 in LTM mount, it must be a very, very special lens !

Here is one from yesterday - with 50 Summicron v5 and yellow filter:

My very first feeling tells me, that one can work very fast with the MM and proper B&W filters with minimal or even no necessary PP - these above have very little processing done in Lightroom (a little highlight protection, some added contrast/ black point cutting and that's about it).

I am heading now out and stock on yellow and orange filters - maybe the odd red filter as well. Too bad, my filter sizes are all over the place - crazy ;-)
 
Just got notification that mine shipped. I'm excited to play with my v2 Summilux 50mm with it, but considering picking up that 28mm Elmarit Asph to go a bit wider and see what I can do with it. Updates soon!
