Leica M pouch?

If you were to carry your gear "loose" in a non-camera bag, say 1-2 extra lenses in lens pouches, plus an M body with a 35 or 50mm lens, what would you use as a "pouch" (for lack of a better word) or case for the M+lens? Something protective like neoprene or such, rather than an ER case.

I ran into the domke zippees, but have not seen these in person, and I do not know if they are large enough. Any suggestions?

I did this the other day, with the M2 and lens wrapped in bubble wrap! Not a good long-term solution. 😉

Good question. I have the neoprene (?) lens pouches with the little clip on them. They work nicely. But for the camera body with 1 lens, the only thing that comes to mind, oddly, is that movie "High Art" where the photographer takes her M with a 35mm lens out of her large purse. IIRC, it's wrapped in a generously sized piece of velvet like material. Maybe it would be easier to find the write material, and then make a bag for the M + lens to your liking.

Target has case logic bags on sale for $2.50 in the automotive department. They are round and ment for mp3 players. Very well padded, and perfect for lenses. I could fit my 90/4 collapsible elmar and canon 35 in one. You might want to stop in and see if they have any left. They were marked for clearence.

Not really answering Ray's question, but sorta related: I've seen a couple of pics of a "waist case/pouch" for the Leica M series cameras. Sorta shaped like the body portion of a fanny pack but, obviously, without the straps. Has what appears to be loops or a passthrough pocket on the back for one's belt to thread through. I can't seem to locate any official mention of it anywhere. Anybody got any ideas where to locate such a beast?

I just chuck my stuff in my shoulder bag, and go. It's already all banged up anyway, and I don't care if it gets some more character marks; if only I had the lack of sense to buy a black paint M3 to grind down to the brass.

Check B&H for those padded "clothes" that come in various sizes. Couple of different brands, but they all seem to have velcro in the corners to hold it together when you fold it to contain what ever you want.

These?

Which size do you think for an M with a 50mm?

Ray,

That's them. I have a Domke just like that 19x19. I can fit a 20D with 50/1.4 mounted, a 17-40F4 in a bag and a Viv 283 flash. They are not overly thick, but plenty protective for inside another bag. I would think the smallest one would work, it might even be on the big side. The Velcro in the corners makes it so that you can make a "bag" of any size.

Great. BTW, B&H also has similar, less expensive Op/Tech neoprene wraps. I think I will try one next time I order some stuff from them. Thanks for the tip. 😉

An M3 with a rigid 50mm Summicron will fit nicely into a Tenba D5 pouch. This is a relatively lage, padded nylon belt pouch. There is room in there for a Weston meter and at least one spare roll of film as well. The pouch also has a built it waterproof rain bonnet should you need some weather protection on a bad day.

Ray-

I believe that I've found the best solution for this problem. I often just want to carry an M in a backpack and not bother with a regular camera bag- no need to announce in NY that I've got an expensive camera in this bag!

Check out the Artisan & Artist bags at Photo Village- he's the direct importer for them to the US. OK- they're certainly not cheap, but they do the job and are very well made. The case you can carry an M camera with up to about a 75 lens is the ACAM-60 (also called the collector's case) and cost about $75 if I remember correctly. It also comes with an insert so you can store 2 M bodies together. I bought several just to keep camera bodies in. Check out the links:

I have this, and it's absolutely perfect for an M3 with a 50mm Summicron. I can fit the camera and lens in it with an attached hood and cloth shoulder strap (coiled around the lens) as well. This is the case I use to carry my M3 in my purse every day. It's lined with red neoprene.

I will warn you, it's a little bit girly. It also cost way too much for what it is ($50 for what is essentially a makeup pouch) but it was exactly what I needed. If you want to economize, and don't mind getting some funny looks, you could check the cosmetics aisles in Target or Wal-Mart and look for a padded makeup bag. I tried that route, but couldn't find something that was wide enough across the bottom to accomodate the M3 on short notice. I am pretty confident that had I kept looking, I would have found something but I was impatient.

Ray -
Thanks for posting this. I've had the same question since I got my MP w/ 50 'cron.
I currently use a Domke wrap (12", I think) for the camera and lens and throw it in my Crumpler messenger bag. Seems effective, but I want more padding/protection. If the bag fell the body would get a jolt, perhaps putting the RF out of alignment.

Shaaktiman, Melanie - thanks for the info on the Artisan and Artists Rina case - looks great.

Melanie - do you think the protection is sufficient to insulate the camera/lens from a fall from shoulder height?

There may also be a Crumpler camera insert that's appropriate. I have one for my D70 which has great padding, but it's too big for the MP - I want something smaller.

I may also look at the Tenba insert.

Thanks all.

-Mark

Looking at the dimensions, it looks big enough for an M body. I don't know if it would fit with a lens attached, if it is only 1.5 inches deep. Let us know when you receive yours, Patrick. Thanks for all the suggestions, guys (and gal). 🙂
