Recommend me a bag?

Hey all.

I have a domke f2 I lug all this in but hoping to go down to a smaller setup. As you can imagine the more space I have the more I end up trying to bring.

I’m assuming a f5bx is too small but do we think this would all fit in a F3X? How about a Hadley Pro Small?

I can leave the pouch at home or in my hotel room and I should stop carrying the extra lens in the wrap. I hardly use it.

Open to others but I tend to favor the old school pj style bags.

You might really like the ThinkTank Retrospective line. I have similar bulk as you and I get it all in a retrospective 5 (V1) with a 7 as an extra bag for ... extras if the job is smallish. Seriously, the 5 will accommodate your gear.

If I'm doing a set piece battle, it's all in Pelican rolling cases. Don't go there.

Or try the Domke F6. I've got one. Tan. Basically brand new. I'll sell it to you. $50 USD + shipping. I'm in western Canada. Mostly.
 
I have many bags... So it was with some trepidation that I decided to order the Wotancraft Canteener 3.5L sling bag a month or so ago. I have the Domke F2, F5x, and a dozen others, yet this Canteener just kept calling to me.

It's a different kind of bag. You normally use it with the top wide open, just to carry what you want to shoot with and allowing maximum access to grab a camera, a lens, in a hurry. At 3.5L capacity it can't carry too much :: a Leica M with one or two lenses, a few incidentals, a zippered pocket on the back (where I stash my wallet and such), two pockets on the front (space for my phone and my headphone case). When you need to secure the internals, a drawstring top unfolds from the sides of the bag and gets closed.

If you're really serious about carrying a minimum kit to go shooting with, walking and riding transit ... not a big bag to store stuff in ... it is near perfect. I'm delighted with it; since I bought it, I haven't used anything else. :)

It's funny I just sent back a Wotancraft Pilot. It was close to the most perfect bag ever, but the sewn in 'webbing' of the top compartment/flap drove me insane. Also hated the front slide through pocket.

I've thought about taking my f2 or whatever I end up with to my tailor and having her replace the buckle with a fidlock clasp and a quick adjust strap. Fidlock sells a sample kit but also AlpakaGear sells a ready to go strap. Pro Strap

I'll have to look at them again. I tried the TT line years ago and they felt very stiff. Might just need to break in a bit but I did like all the features and layout. I might be too picky :~ lol
 
I find the F6 to be close to perfect for a 1 or 2 body carry, though I usually carry 1 body only and 2 lenses plus a few accesories, notebook & pen. With one of the inserts, if you like, it’s highly configurable.
 
The front zipper pocket on the f6 over the deep slotted pouch on the f3x seems appealing. I don't really use the pockets that much so that might be the ticket.

I wish.. that's what really sent me down this road. I just sent the 10L back a few weeks ago. It was perfect other than front pass-through flap and the webbing/fabric between main compartment and flap. I also think I needed just a inch or two extra depth on the main compartment.

Right now I ordered a F6 and F3X to see which I like. I also ordered some spare parts from Fidlock to "Wotancraft my Domke" so to speak.

I'm so picky apparently, but in the end I should have:
  • Smaller canvas bag with depth and that hugs my body well and I can change config as needed
  • Swap the metal clasps for fidlocks, so easier to get in/out and less noise
  • Add a Billingham shoulder strap pad
  • If I go f3x I'll silence the velcro
  • If I go f6 I'll add paracord zipper pulls

Glad I posted or I would have never found out about the F6. The Tiffen website isn't great about outlining the Domke bags. I wish they had a overview page or something.
 
I’m quite fond of my canvas bag from Kakadu. I bought a Chinese insert that fit great. Like the look…colour pairs well with a denim jacket.

"Wotancraft my Domke" is a highly specialized form of 'pimp my ride'. :LOL:

I'm quite the fan of Alpaka, they make very good quality bags, but unfortunately, they don't make a shoulder satchel that carries a couple of RF size bodies.

My recommendation would be for the sadly discontinued Crumpler Dry Red Boarding Bag. It's an 8L bag which can fit a Leica RF and a small mirrorless camera like the Panasonic G9 with 12-35, and it has a large zippered back pocket which will fit a notebook. Mine has the Billingham shoulder pad. I still wish I had picked up another when they were on runout sale.
