Leica M (typ 240) Field Test and Review

Kristian, great review and photos. Mine is back to Leica so they can make sure the strap lugs are afixed correctly...

One thing I'm unclear on in your review:
"After the first batch of 7 frames on the M9, you could continue to shoot at 1 frame every 3 seconds (before all images were saved to SD). The M240 could shoot 1 frame every 4 seconds while saving."

It seems unclear that the M is faster than the M9 in your wording. I just got the latest LFI and they had a very nice write up on the differences between the two and illustrate the higher frames per second nicely, check it out if you can. And they also don't like the usage of M240... They'd prefer M or M (typ 249) in write ups and reviews.

Thanks for sharing your experience using the M in your work!

The link doesn't seem to work some link to connect the domain to wix site, something seems fishy... I will try again later or with a different browser.

Leica should be careful to not hold on so tightly to "M", they may at some point in the future want to incorporate some other type of focusing mechanism in an M style body

Kwesi - I think the M, R (and S) designations are more for branding now and the origins are lost on not only Leica but their buyers. Seems like they are going towards what Apple is doing and will probably release the next digital Leica as an M as well, my guess would be M (typ 360). Well, after the M-P and M Titoplatinium versions :D

Once the buffer is full and saving, the M9 is actually faster during this process. From the top with a fresh buffer it is the M240 which speeds ahead but takes longer to recover if you constantly lee on shooting after the 'initial' burst. Hope this helps.

Good review. And kudos for revealing a good grasp of the motive for going Monochrom.

Michael

Yes I think Steve Huff has touched on this, and it's certainly not easy justifying owning this, and 'not' the M Monochrom. The M Monochrom excites it's users with it's files which are unique in that if anyone was going to ask to see that 'Leica look' I think the Monochrom provides it.

In use though, the M is much more enjoyable as it's operational qualities make the camera fluid in use and feel much more natural, as apposed to the M Monochrom which feels sluggish at times....but it all depends on what you're used to and your expectations. I use a Nikon D4 which is a very responsive computer/camera and finally I have a Leica that is closer to the operational speeds, as well as ISO abilities, which are important to my kind of work.

Apart from me being able to access the article (weird error before),
I think the key point is that someone professional using the camera and testing what it can do and not counting what is missing in the marketing feature count and not emphasizing what it can not do.

Thanks a lot Kristian for sharing and taking the time to put it together in the first place ... and yes indeed, great pictures - I'm not missing any brick walls :D.

Great review - both in the text and pictures! Thanks for sharing, and please keep your blog going too!

I dearly love my M7 (and before that, a M6TTL), but switched to digital last year. The M8/8.2/9 sounded interesting but with too many compromises for their uncompromising price tag (especially for low light shooting). This is the first Digital M that has convinced me to want to shell out the US$7k entry price. So I've had a M240 on pre-order with Adorama since it was announced, and I'm beginning to slightly lose my mind from the wait!

all review and video nicely presented! How you enjoy to shot with nokton 35 at 1.2? How understood they are mostly photographed at higher aperture?

Good One K !

Aside from the color which looks Yummy Good
i really love the b&w rendering of the new 'M'240 ...
way prefer it to the over Stylized M monochrome 'look' ( i will probably be put over the Coals for saying this )
