Leica M240 depreciation curve?

Digital cams..
Not an investment to be sure..
At least you can write them off at tax time..
Some of us..lol..
I generally buy 2+ year old models..brand new..

Let someone else take the big hit..

The depreciation predictions can’t paint broad strokes.

-M8 has probably hit bottom at about $1400 US though as rear screens fail this may change but it’ll be the original ‘MD’ by default.

-M9 has a devoted following and an M9P with a new sensor should defy the above depreciation model

-Monochroms of both flavors available today will hold value because of their unique nature, especially the M9M

-M240/262/ME has no major issues and are plentiful so they’ll take the biggest hit

-M10? Hard to say. First real film M-sized digital. Mechanically what a digital M should have been all along. Many are content with 24MP. Depends what the M11 brings to the game.

What the M11 could have that will make the M10 depreciate like usual:

- More weather sealing
- IBIS
- Different sensor versions: high MP, standard MP, low MP
- Internal memory
- App integration (upload directly to Instagram, anyone?)
- The usual rearranging of buttons, dials, etc.

The digital imperative is to get people to buy the new camera. Leica is not going to rest on their laurels for the sake of the Leica M10 retaining its value! We are doomed.

More weather sealing?
-pointless if the M lenses aren't water sealed themselves (they aren't)

IBIS?
-nice, but M is about simplicity and Leica omitted video from the M10. You can already shoot at low shutter speeds if you are careful

Different versions?
-small company, don't think they'll have the resources for more than 1 new sensor optimized for M glass at a time

Internal Memory?
-no biggie

App integration
-for Instagram? Really? You have your iPhone for that

What I think are more plausible:
-Sensor with greater dynamic range, base ISO 25 or 50. I doubt anything beyond 30 or 36MP. You have the SLII for more.
-expnaded High ISO with clean files at ? ISO 25,000,
-maybe an EVF with internal power & higher resolution
-or quite possibly, a version with a hybrid VF.

But...if weather sealing is pointless, why did they improve it for the M10? And the M11 might have video, and IBIS is still useful for photography (especially travel, street, documentary, and photojournalism). And Leica's a growing company that's doing better financially all the time. Admittedly, internal memory and apps are in the early stages, so it might be in the M12 instead.

The stuff on your list is likely, too, but they're just the usual incremental improvements. I bet they'll make an M-mount body with a rangefinder-style EVF instead of adding a hybrid EVF, though.

Let's hope an M11 does send M10 prices downwards.....and I'll most likely get one, even though I'm chugging along just fine with the M262, only Leica M body, film or digital, I ever purchased brand new, almost 4 years ago now and the jpeg's still make me smile when they come out of Adobe Camera raw.

24MP is a lot of resolution and an M262, 21mm f3.4 SEM, 35mm f1.4 FLE, 75mm f2 APO and 135mm f3.4 APO is my go to travel and/or carry any day/anywhere kit.

It'll be interesting to see if dealers here in the US try to manipulate the used market prices with the upcoming price increases on the new stuff.

What about a look back on the I´s (Ig, If, ...)?
No rangefinder, a Visoflex connection as EVF. So to say a Leica T but with FF.
Resolution 24 MP is sufficient.

You could have easily picked up an m240 in decemeber of 2018 for about $2500

Anyone remembers the M240's depreciation curve after it's release ?
When did it hit $5500 $5000 $4500 $4000 $3500 until the current average of maybe $3200.
Thanks!
