leica m6 hinged back

Should be some foam light seal strip or something on the down side of hinged back? Back of my M6 has no seals and when baseplate is closed, it is not firm in its position - it "clicks" when pushed. Is it normal?

A hinged back would be the swing-open kind of back, which Leica RFs do not have 🙂.

Foam seals are unnecessary, but clicking sounds when the bottom plate is pushed means there's some play in the locking mechanism, which shouldn't be there.

Study it closely once it's without film, you should be able to figure out where the play comes from. The Leica bottom plate lock is no rocket science, it's dead simple! Maybe a former owner tried to open the camera without unlocking completely and pulled too hard. No need to bend anything yourself, unless it will be bending back into shape.

That's normal. I have 2 M6s. Neither one has seals. And they both click just a bit when you push on the back. Don't worry.

Is your camera currently loaded with film? Mine is, and I have no clicks when pushing the back door.

An empty camera might have that little bit more play that is taken up by the film when the camera is loaded, nothing to worry about!

that's normal. i called leica once for this.
they said they would use some sort of tape to stop the clicking-sound.
so just put some tape on the lower end of the backdoor and it should stop.

Thanks a lot all of you. Right now it looks like some M6 "click" and some don´t - is it possible that older ones have some play between door and baseplate (mine is earlier, no. 1708274) and later Leica due to complaints changed something or added some tape or seal to avoid clicking?

from memory, the cameras starting with the M7 added 3 seal strips. One on either side of the body in the channel where the door closes and one on the door at the bottom edge. My MP had these and when I had my M6ttl serviced I had them retro fitted. My M6 didn't have seals and clicked as have a couple of M2's and my M4. Quite normal. The important seal is the one on the body underneath the back door top edge and the 3 seals on the light baffle fitted in the camera shell.

That's what my M6 has taped in.
Bought it used a few years ago, so I don't know who did put it in.
My MP (bought it new) didn't have any tape inside so i just added it.
no problem at all.

Sorry to resurrect the thread with a "me too" moment, but I'm about to shoot some infrared super-sensitive stock...

I have a click only on one side - upper left, near the hinge, under the viewfinder. Everywhere else is totally stiff on the back. It's a M6 from 1988 (17xxx serial).

This is totally within reason and shouldn't affect light tightness, right?

my M6 (1988) has a felt/tape seal between the bottom of the backdoor and the back of the camera. this is the only M camera I have had that has this. It was factory fitted, but is a little 'gunky' so i'll be cleaning it off and will re-apply when i get around to it.

My click/play isn't near the bottom, it's near the upper left, near the hinge itself.

Mine doesn't 'click' but it does push in a little sometimes.

My M4-P has a little movement bottom left corner of the door. But no click.
It did worry me when I first noticed it but there are no light leaks.

Interestingly my M3 has felt strips on either side of the door opening.
No clicks or movement. Once you shut that door and lock on the base plate it's like a bank vault... (a very small one anyways... ) 😀
