"cloth focal plane shutter controls exposure times electronically" I found this disappointing phraseology on the Leica Website.

Cloth Shutter? Certainly not something to brag about.

I'll stick to my Contax G2 and my metal shutter.

Uh-oh, here comes Billy Goat Gruff again!

Seriously, although there are a lot of disadvantages to the traditional cloth-curtain shutter, it does tend to be quieter than a metal-blade shutter. Compare a Leica M to a Bessa and you'll hear the difference.

Actually, it's also more rugged under some kinds of conditions. Poke a blade of a metal shutter with a fingertip or film end while loading film, and it's quite likely you'll dent it enough to knock the blades out of their tracks the next time the shutter fires. You can give a cloth shutter curtain a fairly good poke without hurting it at all. So if you're all thumbs when it comes to film loading, cloth may actually be safer!

To The President of Leica: You should be ashamed for charging such a high price for cloth. You and your engineers are a complete embarrassment to the Leica Name.

I missed the punchline.

I actaully do wish Leica had switch to a blade shutter system for their M6+ models.. Some times, 1/1000 just doesn't cut it!

I don't worry a lot about things I can't afford. The same goes for things I can afford but have no intentions of buying. It's a waste of time.

Welcome to the light.

. . . . open arms. . . . .

Yes, the Leica M7 has a cloth shutter which needs to be adjusted from time to time and it's too bad, really, because if you don't leave the lens cap on, the sun will burn a hole right through the shutter in minutes flat. (Me too! I prefer metal shutters.) :)

HEY JORGE TORRALBA... WHY DID YOU REMOVE MY COMMENT?

Jorge Torralba.....Please accept my critique as my input and opinion......I am just stating that for the price of the Leica; It should have a metal shutter.

PLease don't remove my honest opinion......

:) Frank, I'll keep that in mind the next time I leave the house with the intention on leaving a camera sitting on the dashboard of my car, face up, with the lens cap off. I wouldn't do that to my Bessa R2, or my Canon P, the happy meal Star Wars watch I got from Burger King, or my wife's APS P&S (...well on second thought). :) :) Seriously, would you?

:)

p.s. Hey my CLE has a cloth shutter! (oops! doesn't count doesn't cost as much and isn't nearly as prestigious...nevermind).

Easy way to identify flamers & trolls: their tendency to use all caps
Or small caps, 'er letters. :)

Hopefully you do a drive-through so that you don't leave the car. Here in Vancouver, all it takes is 2 minutes...or 2 seconds, and then, POOF! It's gone. :)

What's wrong with it?

What's wrong with it?

What's wrong with the cloth shutter? The cloth shutter curtains in my old FED are much much quieter than the metal shutter in any of my other cameras...

I'm pretty sure that counts for something for the Leicaphiles ;)

Not much wrong with the cloth shutters on my Leica II and IIIa (both 1936). Both still original and both working fine... Hmm!

How long do you think it takes the sun. to burn a hole in a thin sheet of titanium??
This has been tested. Cloth was more resistant.....

I didn't know the exact time,Frank, I never tried it on my camera's :D And do you know what happens in a SLR? The shutter is fine, but the plastic viewfinder "glass" sags, causing misfocus.

For XXXGRAPENUTSXXX :

somebody said it. The cloth shutter is quiet, lightweight, etc. The shutter design of the Leica camera is as it is for a reason (as stated above), not for cost cutting. Leica, as everyone knows, doesn't make cost an issue in their products. A mixed blessing. That is a large part of their survival. one does not buy a Leica to save money, but simply to own something of unequalled quality and mechanical perfection. Of course there are other cameras of similar quality out there too. . . And people buy a Leica before an R3A for its quiet shutter, build quality, smooth as silk movements, etc. EVERY detail of the classic leicas has purpose and adds to the Leica effect. I can't speak for the M7, but surely it carries on with the tradition.

The Zeiss uses a metal shutter (I believe), and is not nearly as quiet from what i heard on an online review of shutter speeds. A cloth shutter is simply more graceful and more in line with the concept of Leica - stealth, finesse, etc.

The evolutions and differentiations across styles and brands are described in both glowing and dim prose here. You will learn alot about why others' opinions are as they are, and why each camera has its place with a photographer somewhere.

I never would have thought of the GSN as a great camera, but reading others' reviews and experiences has changed my outlook. I see its qualities, its uniqueness. And the same for Russian cameras and lenses.

RFF is a mind broadening place, perhaps more so that any other online photography forum - and I have read through probably all of the English language forums that exist. Stick around and let in the light.
