Andy, the sensor in the M8 is produced by Kodak. I think that choice was Leica's first mistake considering the success of Kodak's professional digital cameras. From what I have read and my understanding, Kodak's sensors are first rate, it's just the programming of the firmware has always been a problem. If I am not mistaken, Jena-Optik, writes the firmware for the M8.
Leitz should have gone with a Sony chip. Would have been less costly and might have lowered the selling price of the M8 to begin with.

Finally a thead on this where everyone is not complaining about this news.
Probably like many of you, we sunk some hard earned dollars into this camera. I love the fickle thing quirks and all. Having an M8 modular system is great news indeed.
Upgrades means innovation designed to spec of the M8, which will result in challenges for Leica engineers, and that is a good thing - as we know, true innovation comes from overcoming limits.
Do I need a sapphire crystal display? Not on my budget. Do I need a quiet shutter? Not on my budget. Do I want an imminent M8 FF sensor package?
Where do I stand in line?

Kodak has decades of experience in light capture & has been an innovator in CCD design
I have been disappointed in the IQ I see from Sony chipped Nikon DSLRs
along with Fujifilm, Kodak has the heritage of image capture that results in superior color/tonality in the output from their high end sensors
I would much rather have a company whose whole being is involved with light capture design the sensor in my camera, than have one that made its mark building Betamax VCRs and Walkman radios

Well, If my wife had been upgradable....

I would have simply sent here back to her parents for a firmware upgrade, instead of divorcing her for all her faults and mediochre performance. She turned out to need upgrades for cooking performance, poor dance maneuvers and a weak fidelity chip. And, I spent a lot more on her in the time I was with her than the price of an M8.

Why does everyone "need" a FF camera? Are they such bad shooters they always cut heads off and hope a FF sensor will remedy the problem?
The M8 is such a good addition to the M lineup that it revived the Leica name and pushed prices sky high. Noctilux and anything used Leica comes to mind. It's also a main reason this forum is so popular, I'm 100% sure.

People "need" FF cameras not because the "crop" creates issue in composition... but more so because crop sensors impact the depth of field of a lens.
