Leica Camera AG offers every LEICA M8 customer a basic kit of two UV/IR filters with diameters of her/his choice and free of charge. Delivery will commence as of early February 2007. In order to receive the two free IR/UV filters, please register yourself as of December 6th, 2006, including your name and address as well as the camera's serial number. After your registration you can order two filters of choice which will be delivered to your address. Additional filters will be available from your Leica dealer. -From the Leica web site today 11/24/06

Does it seem from this excerpt from Leica's announcement that the free IR filters will be only for those people who've already received their M8s? For anyone else that buys a camera after Dec. 6th we're on our own and need to buy them?

Seems to me they should throw in at least 1 filter to all purchasers. What do you think?

No, that's not what it means. You've misinterpreted the post (this has been discussed on the Leica forum) possibly because of an unfortunate translation from German.

What they were trying to say is that the registration site will not even be functioning **until** Dec. 6 -- you will not even be able to register until then, and anyone who does register an M8 will then be eligible to get the free filters. That will include new buyers.

As of Dec 6th

As of Dec 6th

I agree, "as of Dec 6th" means "starting on", not ending on. If they meant "ending on" they would say "through Dec 6th"

I am not happy havingto send the camera back while new buyers get a fixed version. It should be old buyers get a new camera and the buyers wait for more products off the line.

Jorge, I guess it's because I don't own one that I thought their response was pretty decent. It seems to be consistent with how product recalls generally work; call back the ones with the problem, and fix it on the line so it doesn't happen again. I suspect that those whom MR disdainfully called the nattering nabobs of negativity (citing Mr. Nolo Contendere) had something to do with the decision to provide the IR filters for free.

Spiro Agnew indeed. He pleaded guilty to nolo contendere to tax evasion and money laundering arising from some corruption scandal from when he was in Maryland politics. I believe the speechwriter was William Safire.

I read it as every owner/purchaser of an M8 would receive 2 UV/IR filters. This seems reasonable as far as it goes. However, I'm not much for UV filters in the first place. But if they are willing to supply me with 2 then it seems a good deal to me.

***yesterday a different post was put up before this one announcing Leica’s solution / fix. Imagine my surprise when the thread was pulled by RFf mods so I’ll post below what I posted yesterday.

Good news! I suspected from past issues with my Digilux2 that there was an issue with a circuit card.

Now let's see what people have to say regarding two free filters and a 30% discount (I have an idea :bang: )

"I have more then two lenses, how many coats on those filters (as if they will not be good enough), what about my xyz lens(s), this solution is not good enough- the camera HAD to perfect from the start, Leica users are sheep to the slaughter, Leica just wants to sell more lenses, and on and on" 😀

My question in anticipation of the avalanche- if a couple of free Leica IR cut filters, a 30% discount on lenses, and a factory fresh fix are not good enough then what would be (good enough) short of turning back the hands of time? It reminds me of that old Jimmy Stewart movie where everyone wants to make a run on the bank (which would have killed the bank, its customers and the town). Let's hope most of us have the sense that Jimmy Stewarts character had not to kill our beloved brand.

On the other hand...

IR shooters will be happy to know that the IR capabilities of the camera won't be watered down... 😉

The 30% discount on a single lens purchase is missing. I assume that was Leica's way of compensating the early buyers for any inconvenience in returning the camera to Solms. It is missing.

Just remember that this is far above and beyond anything that Leitz did for M5 buyers. 😱 😀 🙂 😎
