Does anyone know, whether the Leica M8, M9 warranty is transferable?

I am assuming "NO". And that would be the risk, when buying a pre-owned M8 or M9.

Of course, this can be addressed with a very cooperative "former owner", but it is one step of complication.

No, the warranty is transferable. Indeed, there is a form for that purpose. You can also write a letter to Leica sending them a copy of the warranty when transferring it.

On the M8.2 I had a UK Passport warranty, which was transferable: it had a form for that purpose. The M9 had an international warranty, which was also transferrable. Indeed, I transferred both warranties when I sold the cameras.

It seems to me that a Leica purchased in the US, whatever the Leica USA policy is, would be fixed by Solms under the international warranty. When I lived in Japan years ago and had problems with my M6 that was purchased in Hong Kong — at that time the Hong Hong price was US$1,300 versus a US price of $1,700 — Leica USA fixed my camera for free even after the warranty period because it had a problem that Leica recognized as a manufcaturing issue.
