I went out with a combination of M9+M21/3.4ASPH. Although this lens has a focal length of 21mm, my biggest feeling after using it in the past few years is that it is a good lens for humanistic documentary. Look at the picture above, at the maximum aperture, at the closest focusing distance of this lens to 0.7 meters, such an ultra-wide focal length, the overall feeling of shooting portraits is normal, and the blur of the background is sufficient.

why? Obviously 21mm is the focal length of large scenes and scenery in the SLR camera system. How can it become a humanistic documentary lens on the Leica M series? This is the difference in structure between rangefinder and SLR body and lens. With the shorter rangefinder Leica flange distance, there is basically no distortion in the ultra-wide angle, and the characters are not significantly deformed, which is impressive. Moreover, these lenses are classic and compact, usually less than 300 grams, plus an inconspicuous body, so the rangefinder Leica is a system born for humanistic documentary. Its lens no matter the head or wide-angle, no matter ultra-wide-angle or medium-telephoto (the rangefinder Leica telephoto lens is very limited, basically reaching the top at 135mm, and the macular focus of the linkage rangefinder is not designed for telephoto), They are all tools for humanistic documentary. In fact, the wider the focal length, the closer you can get to the subject. A slightly smaller aperture value can achieve hyperfocal shooting, which is more convenient for photographers to get close and quickly hunt, especially for war reporters and emergency reporters at close range. Snapshot.

Interesting thoughts. I see no photograph though. I use the ZM 21 f4.5. Faces near the edge can be distorted but with many subjects it’s impossible to tell it’s a 21 from the final image. I read recently of a photographer preferring 28 rather than 35 on his Leica for family as he can include a group seated at table without himself needing to disturb them by getting up from the table to get the shot.

Welcome! Thanks for your post. I don't see your picture, so I'll guess something didn't work in the uploading process. We have a sticky thread with member's suggestions on methods to insert photos in posts in the RFF Help / Feedback forum, here:
