Up to $1.500 discount... I think it's a unique chance for those who were planning to buy M9 or M9-P:

Yes, and whether they will support the M9 like the M8 spooks me. If there was a track record like they now have with dropping service so fast, I would have never gotten into the M9.

I would not trust Leica anymore. What a shame it has come to this.

The best camera is one that still works!
I don't see the problem ... a lot of manufacturers discount current models when there is an impending upgraded model near.

Have you gentlemen seen Stefan Daniel's statement regarding serviceability of M8/M8.2 displays and Leica's action to ensure future support for the M9? You may find it reassuring: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/customer-forum/252700-serviceability-m8-m8-2-displays.html

Well ... Leica cameras are no longer full-mechanical hand-assembled and adjusted mechanical masterpieces. They have to rely on other companies for parts like everybody else in the electronic business and as a small company they are even more dependent than the "big guys" (Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc...)

in 4 years the screen for m9 will not be replaced by leica if it has faults. These oriental so called lcd screens are not tested to work without a problem for 50 years..

Don't get me wrong here... I am not a fan of the new Leica given what the CEO stated this year...
But if u are referring to the LCD issue.. At the end of the day, it is no different for any other digital camera company when it relates to how much of the parts for a camera are in your control versus an external vendor...
Leica simply did not control the supply chain for certain key electronic parts. The third party vendor eventually tells Leica it will end of Life that component and it is up to Leica to decide how big of a one time buy.
Their only choice now is to go out on the grey market for the part or offer a LCD unit from a parts camera or do what they did in the other email thread, offer u a trade up price for the m9.
At the end of the day, even on the grey market that part may have dried up, since the LCD part was not the latest and greatest technology when the m8 shipped.

Relax. M9s are out there in good numbers. There'll be support as far as is possible for many years. It's not an M3. And who would have thought that would have or wanted it to have a 50 year plus life anyway.

I'm sort of surprised that the screen (and likely interface with it) is so custom as to be irreplaceable. Seems like, whatever else there is about the camera, that this would have been a fairly standard part. Go to CES, there are a lot of folks making cheap tiny screens, surely someone could make a compatible one...

I thought we'd moved on from that screen situation? It's Leica's call and we either accept or reject their decision.
I'll bet my house that they don't let that type of situation affect the M9's future ... they're not that stupid to make the same mistake twice IMO.

Ohh geez!! Thanks a lot!!!
I have a Tower Type 3 in beautiful shape that I love very much. I also have a wonderful little Leica iiic that is very, very nice. But now, thanks to this thread, I have finally taken the plunge and bought an M9 from Amazon. I know that this is likely a discount prior to introducing an upgraded camera, but I wouldn't be able to afford that one anyway so this seemed to be the best time to make my purchase.
I do hope my thread mount lenses will work as it will take me months to pay this credit card bill off and allow me to buy an M lens.
Anyone want a Canon 5D???

It gets back to economy of scale. A special run for one customer (Leica) for an out of date LCD screen is going to cost a very pretty penny... So long as someone has those manufacturing components around still.. Chances are high that it may have been scraped already.. Even if that part was originally multi-sourced from more than a couple of oem vendors.

Maybe this says more about people's expectations and projections than about Leica. What would Leica have had to do to earn your trust, keep up the same price forever?

Leica is stuck between a rock and a hard place. They get slagged for not keeping up with the camera industry and the 21st century yet gets slagged again when they do try.
