LEICA M9 samples

So far - in the digital saga, I have seen nothing to make me hugely dissatisfied with the results from my humble D40! - except perhaps, the occasional large print from a friends digital Hasselblad! - could be - as I age, I'm more easily pleased, or my eyes are not what they were! 🙂
Dave.

Unless you need high FPS for sports, or shoot in extremely dark places where you can't always use flash (i.e. some weddings) a D40 is just as good as an M9 or D700; 99% of normal people, and probably 90% of photographers wouldn't even be able to tell the difference. Those who need lightning fast AF, 9fps, and ISO 3200, however, have to pay a supreme premium for it, given that the general every-day IQ they get isn't that much better for something small like an 8x10 print.

Really sharp daylight pictures dont say much about a lens or its camera. Maybe something about OOF. No doubt your camera is great but let's see some lowlight pix at full aperture. [nice pix BTW]

What I want to know is how you guys got ahold of your M9's - it seems that no dealers have them, and they are talking about months of waiting. Are supplies more plentiful in Europe than in North America?

I ordered mine with Ffordes a few weeks before the ninth, as soon as the dealers had word of the camera, I got it on the 17th of September, but before that Cameraexpress in Holland called me on the 10th of September to tell me he had put one aside in case I wanted it.

I was on "the list" for one, didn't expect to hear of one available until Dec-Feb. Got a call from my Hasselblad dealer saying the first one had arrived and I could have it if I wanted it! Wasn't planning on it that day, but when opportunity knocks..........

On a different note, I completely agree with most of what has been said about other cameras including the D700 and D40......both can take beautiful pictures. For me, NOT a professional photographer at all, it's as much about the beauty, quality, and uniqueness of the device as the photos that come out of them. It's like the old stupid arguments about "which car is better".....the correct answer is the one the driver likes the most in my humble opinion.

The one thing I have to say though about the Leicas and Hasselblads is that without all the automatic stuff, crazy high ISO settings, 9+FPS, vibration reduction, etc. it really makes me slow down, get back to basics, and really think about what I'm doing. I still use my D700 for sports and high-speed stuff when I'm taking 300-500 pictures at a single event, but when I want to slow down and take a photograph, the others are great!

You've interpolated your 12MP NEF to 25MP. I think comparisons are generally based on the size of image the camera sensor produces without interpolation.

Of course, you may have just been making fun, it's possible for me to miss that now-and-then.

No problem. Here's what happens ....this is on the 4th picture down in the samples above of the trees showing street and lamp post .

Dimension: 5200 × 3456
Device Make : Leica Camera AG
Device Model : M9 Digital Camera
Color Space :RGB
Color Profile: Adobe RGB (1998)
Kind: TIFF Image
Size: 53.9MB on disk

I suspect what you are doing is converting your .dng file to 8 bit, not 16 bit. A file from the M9 at 300ppi 16bit colour is 103mb, if I convert that to 8 bit it becomes a 52mb file (give or take a little). If you are using Adobbe ACR for processing your .dng the criteria is displayed just under the photo in the ACR window, just click on this and change to 16 bit.
