Leica macro

Since a couple people asked, and it looks like I am the only one here who uses it (!?) a few words on the 90mm f4 and the eyes. I really enjoy it, the eyes do a great job of adjusting for the close focus, and of course with the m8 you can chimp to verify. The lens seems up to Leica quality. I have the 90 and the adapter in my regular bag, since the lens is light, and the adapter is practically weightless. The ability to do completely different kinds of things is terrific, in just a moment you can switch from taking regular street scenes to closeups of rusty locks or leaves or what have you.

It is indeed a great setup, but incorrectly named, in my opinion. The 50cm minimum focusing distance makes it a 90/4 'little bit closer' elmar and not a true 'macro' elmar. Simply too limiting for my tastes. For a fraction of the price I bought myself a Nikon F3 kit with macro lens and motor drive for macro photography. Simply a question of using the right tool for the job. All those clumsy visoflexes and bellows... just to turn a great compact camera like the Leica M into a cumbersome and ungainly SLR. Why not just get the real thing?

I also believe the 90/4 macro setup is too limiting for it's cost. It looks nice, however, and very rangefinder-like.

As CQ suggested, use a Pana G1, along with an Apochromat (Canon 500D, 250D ...), maybe with the 45-200. The swivel-mounted display helps as well. It's a nice additon to an M setup for macro and telephoto stuff.

I like the Panasonic G1 approach. The body will cost you less than a good Visoflex outfit and you get a spare body out of the deal.
To me it's a no brainer.

I am with you eef.... I find the 90mm macro combination superb and not at all limiting.

The lens on its own is no slouch either.
