Leica MD

The picture has been around for a while. The caption says it is a design concept (i.e. what someone thought it might look like). Leica is being very, very quiet about the digital M and I expect it will be months before we see anything tangible (like pictures) from Solms.

Sorry!

Sorry!

I had chest pain just looking at it. :D

Hopefully Leica will commence dribbling out news at the photo shows in 2006 to keep prospective buyers "on the hook." A year is a long time to wait.

Supposedly they will announce it at Photokina in the Fall of '06. Gives everyone a little time to win the Lottery in your respective State/Province/Country.

Rumor says the Digital M will be at the 2006 PMA convention in Orlando Florida at the end of February - that's rumor. It will almost certainly be ready for Photokina in September. If it isn't ready by Photokina I think Leica is in real trouble (as if it wasn't already).

Thanks for the reminder about Photokina being in the fall, zeos. I hope we hear something at PMA, but will not be holding my breath. Wouldn't a RD-2 and/or Zeiss Ikon digital and/or Minolta Hexar Digital RF announcement add a bit of spice as well?

Leica Solms probably prays every day that announcements like those will not be made before the digital M is ready for market. I expect there will be an R-D2 and I expect it will be a really good camera.

"Leica MD" always makes me think of the finderless Leica M built for post offices in the 1960s.

me too, I've always wondered what they were for... you say they were made for post offices, what did they do with them ? I though they were made to be attached to microscopes.

The P.O. used them for photographing arrays of metering counters for billing purposes I think.

they had special fixed focus lenses as well. Of course the Md was a general purpose scientific camera, originally a low cost model. I don't understand why it isn't half-price today !

They might have been used by post offices, but originally they were designed for microscopes and other scientific equipment. Leitz's other well known division is the production of scientic equipment and optics.

The article says there is a chance of having a digital back for M. Is it posible? would it fit ALL M cameras?
At this time, those who know will not say. The rest of us don't know anything. Your guess is as good as ours.

they ought to be $200 cheaper than an M2 not $200 dearer, have you seen the price of a rangefinder assembly ?

these leicap(h)iles ain't got no sense !

The article says that when they are introduced, shipments will only be a few weeks away. IOW, no showing a prototype with a long leadtime to actual delivery.

Not that I am interested in a purchase; I'd rather have the new ZD and wait to see what Zeiss and Epson do in the next couple of years.
