John,
Looks like Leica made another camera especially built for me. I want to know the price pronto so perhaps I can pre order one. I was wise when the M-240 came out to secure a chrome 90 Macro Elmar to exploit possible live view to use this camera also as a scanner.
I still love my CCD look on my Monochrom. How cool to have another M-body with another sensor. I'm in heaven. Another dream comes true, and I'm a lucky guy.
Thank you Leica.

The camera to replace all others?

I've always loved what I've seen of the output from the MM (CCD) ... will this new model live up to expectations I wonder?

This is exciting news, and I don't even own a Leica. If I could afford just one digital M, it would be the Monochrom. Good on Leica! I hope the new Monochrom is very successful for them. The Ragnar Axelsson image samples look terrific (see the picture of the old shepherd).

This may even produce better black and white than a Merrill ... not to mention the option to shoot black and white video!

Dan,
The CCD look is definately special. CMOS is like a different medium. I want both. Already own a Monochrom.
I can't believe that Leica has made me another dream camera.

Some pictures from Iceland shot with the new M Monochrom (Typ 246) are up on the Leica blog:

I have no need to upgrade. In fact I prefer the original for all the stuff it doesn't have.
But I think for those that want more stuff on their camera this would be a good move for Leica and for those that want that stuff.
I always say want to shoot video there are certainly make much better tools for that job already out there.

I'm not buying the M-246 for the video and it is unlikely I will ever use it. I'm buying it for a different sensor, a different look, and for the live view capabilities that will enable me to use it to scan film. The 2GB buffer and larger screen are a bonus.
I was considering buying a second Monochrom because I tend to go out shooting with two cameras with one with a wide and another with a 50.
I would not be upgrading, nothing replaces a CCD sensor, I would just be buying a second monochrome camera body.
Pixel size is important. Not sure how pixel size vs pixel count balances, but I'm pretty sure both Monochrom cameras are both killer. I wouldn't call the M-246 a replacement for the Monochrom. The original Monochrom is distinct enough that it will always be without peer.

"Brutal," I say. Unbeatable.
I wonder if there will be a chrome version?

Or you trade them in for a tri-elmar. You will only need one body, and you get a 35mm as a bonus.John, 28 Cron and 50 Lux ASPH. Cal
