Nobody here thinking that - if it's true - the 21/1.4 is much more spectacular than a new Noctilux ? That one would be worth EUR 5000 if you ask me ....
How big can it be ...

no matter what price.. I think it's cool that Leica accepted some challenges for producing such 21/1.4.
Nikon can no longer boast about its own 28/1.4
We have never seen before 21/2 and voila it comes 21/1.4 directly from f2.8 for Leica. Two stops ahead, hm.
Is it having super fast very wide lenses important for Leica to show for other in the world? Like Noctilux for the brand recognition.

Sorry to correct you, there is a Zuiko 21/2. Still 21/1.4 is nearly unbelievable.
Also, I would think an Elmar is f2.8. So maybe there are other mistakes.

Whoa. The lens is .95? So much for a focusing planeAnd $16,000 US?
At the current exchange rate it's closer to $11K. The dollar has been low - albeit better in recent weeks - but its never been as low as two dlollars to the euro, yet.

I just hope the price of he M8.2 leaks soon. My wife and I are each trying to sell our M8.1s on ePay right now and they're just stagnating. If the new lens pricing is anything to go by, our M8s would seem all the more a bargain.
the price will be the same as current one. on that same other website there was another leak from norway/sweeden or something like that, with the price quoted.

I think Leica has lost any connection with reality! $12,000 for a lens??????

... likes film again.
21/1.4 + M8 or M7 makes a nice combination for reportage photography, Leica`s original market. Instead of struggling with all the problems a 24x36 sensor in a hypothetical M9 would bring, they just stretch the optics a little. A clever move, IMHO.

Dear Ray,
I wondered how long it would be before we saw such a complaint from one of the usual suspects.
No, you're the one who has lost touch with reality. This is real; this is a lens; this is what it costs. Same with the Summiluxes.
The rest -- the $1000 f/1 and its ilk -- is the fantasy.
Cheers,

yeah 28/1.4 fov with m8 is sweet. I prefer 28mm much more than 35mm as wide lens. so with digital and film bodies combo 21-28-50 of two lenses (21 lux and 50 noctilux) would be awesome! Maybe I wait 5 years so I can add that 21/1.4 as complement to Super Angulon

Roger, do you suspect there is a big market for a $12,000 lens? Perhaps they don't really mean to sell them to people who use lenses, but only to collectors? Perhaps they will sell it in a little coffin. I still say Leica is out of touch.

Does anyone know if these new lenses, the superspeed wides, in particular, are designed to cover a full frame, or are they to work on the cropped M8 sensor?

If you're selling lenses at $6000 euros a pop, you really don't need a big market. Leica prices things at a point people are willing to pay. Just because you -- or I for that matter -- won't, does not mean there aren't people out there ready and willing to drop that much. Complaints about Leica's being too expensive are a bit tired and lame.

Of course it is for both mediums. lenses look quite large.
It would be very stupid if it was for cropped.

funkaoshi, I was assuming there wasn't a big mark-up on the lenses. So you think they are really marking these things up to make a big profit on each one? Interesting.

it aint for big market
it aint for big profits
it aint shares holder company
it aint for to compete canon
it is for photographers who want to take shots no matter $$$.

Well, fortunately for my bank account, I doubt I could see the difference in photos shot with a $5,000 lens and a $12,000 lens.

There's the mark-up that's needed to make a profit. Suppose they dropped the price 1000 euros on the Noctilux, from 8000 to 7000. Would they sell 100x as many? Because that's probably (at a wild guess) what they'd need to do. No: they'd have to listen to complaints that 7000 euros was too much too.
Oh; and yes, they are full frame.
I've known that there was a new Noctilux (and the Summiluxes, and the f/3.8) since Arles, though I wasn't sure about the speed of the Noctilux (one said f/1, another f/0.95). It's been hard keeping quiet. No, I didn't see prototypes (bul I will in two weeks' time...)
Cheers,
R.

I must say, the 24 and 21 lenses are far more appealing than the new Noctilux (but only because I own an f1.0). But I think I'll have to wait - as spectacular as they are (and as much as I must give Leica credit for these amazing lenses), I can't really afford one at the mo
