I guess Cosina (ZM, CV) has taken over the Summicron and Elmarit class of the lens market and Leica had to find a niche in the audacity class.

well leica is increasingly targeting a class of consumers who are intent on buying the best regardless of the price. zeiss / cosina are taking the rest (and thank god for that).

Maybe Leica will announce that they'll only sell to folks who are willing to buy their products. Oh, maybe they already do that. I wonder are there similar bashers of expensive cars on car forums or high end audio equipment on audio forums?

You mean bashing $5000 power cables? Nah......

@sepiareverb - what bashing? no bashing here. leica have a brand that signals "exclusive" and "superior" and they are releasing products that live up to it. there strategy now is to skim the top end of the market. why get angry when someone points that out?

I have to admit there are far worse examples out there than Leica ... some of the clothing companies come to mind.

I wonder if early man, when he first started weaving fibres together and using animal hides for protection from the elements, would have been shocked if he'd been told that one day his option could be to buy similar products made by Benneton or Yves St Laurent for fantastic prices! :p

@keith - i agree...almost every consumer product has a similar "prestige" class where a manufacturer trades not only in quality but other attributes. because of the higher margins, this niche is always desirable. but that doesn't mean we should treat it as anything but the luxury buy that it is.

Is there a site we can check for the results later?
it is lunch time here (Mon 15th Sept) and as far as i beleive the pressconference is held after. I think there will be an official press release at the Leica homepage.
The inofficial (LUF) was posted before and some Dealers are also off NDA and have updated their homepage:
e.g.
http://www.dalephotoanddigital.com/_e/dept/11-001/Leica-2-0.htm
http://www.dalephotoanddigital.com/_e/dept/08-002/Leica_Rangefinder_Accessories.htm

but that doesn't mean we should treat it as anything but the luxury buy that it is.

But in every Leica lens thread? C'mon already I think most of us are aware a new Leica lens costs a lot. You certainly don't hear the same song about the Zeiss 15 or 85 being overpriced every time they come up, or every time other Zeiss lenses are brought up.

And not to belabor the point, but a less than hugely expensive lens is on the list and is ignored. When Leica brings out a lower priced product we hear complaits or nothing at all (remember the Summarit songs?) Sure lots loved the Summarits, but plenty of posts griped there too.

It just gets pretty tiresome to have to wade through so many posts that bring nothing substantive to the point being discussed. What if every Neopan 1600 thread had 10 to 15% of the posts griping about the cost of Neopan 1600 being too high for such a niche film? Or that none of the Neopan 1600 images justify the cost of a film that doesn't bring smooth grain to low light shooting?

We didn't even get to ten posts before it started this time...:bang:

0.95/50 : 1m close focus

So it's going to be still 1m closest focusing distance although it has a floating element.
