Leica Repair in the U.S. (2021)

Scott repaired my CLE's issues with the meter being jumpy, and the framelines not working right. I got it back this past Jan. Finally have a chance to run film through today and it was working well.

For the Leica M3 I bought late last year, I had Tuscon Analog CLA it (TUCSON ANALOG WORKSHOP). He does mention on the website he has limited parts, but he did have a replacement early M3 viewfinder with a good condition mirror that mine needed. There was a minor issue with the slow speeds sticking that required me to send it back, but he quickly addressed the issue and fixed it. His turn around was pretty quick.

Nobody should send anything to Sherry Krauter if they ever want to see it again.
I sent her my Summitar in April 2025, almost a year ago.
My emails are not answered.
Her website's server "cannot be found."
I have called day after day and her phone is never answered.
Don't throw your gear away.

I will keep that in mind. He is very good.
Jadon told me that he sold Red Dot Repair in December '25. I believe the person operating it now mostly focuses on Minilux repairs.

He might do work for previous clients, but I think he got pretty burnt out dealing with enthusiasts (i.e. the most demanding, fickle consumers). So, if you had a good relationship with him, probably worth giving him a call.

Firstly, I am sorry about your lens situation. I hope that you find resolution. Also, the warning is fair - don't send things to Sherry's address.

BUT, Sherry has been a pillar of the Leica camera/lens service community. Her reputation is solid and my interactions with her have been professional. If she is not responding to emails/phone calls and not returning equipment and her website is dead, it's fair to assume that something is not right. To that end, I hope she is well, but worry that the signs are counter-indicative.

So, let's give the gal a bit of grace.

(again, I hope you get your lens back).

I have been in conversation with a dealer I bought an M4 from 18 months ago that Sherry had just CLAed. I wanted a copy of the invoice as proof of CLA should I ever want to sell the camera. We waited and waited and nothing was forthcoming. The camera is pretty much flawless, BTW.

Just yesterday, I contacted him again to see if he'd heard anything. He says he's been unable to reach her for 6 months and she's been sitting on at least one item for repair for 2 years.

I have no idea what's going on and wish her nothing but the best. But, at this point, I'd be disinclined to send her new work.

Goes without saying...

I just hope that she's upright and taking nourishment.

People get sick...and worse....

It is a bummer that you don't have record of your CLA, but in the scheme of things...not such a big deal compared to a person's well-being.

Totally agree. Anyone who would look at and try this M4 will know that's it's been serviced and works flawlessly. It was just a nice-to-have.

Sherry had a rep as a good tech but 'bedside manner' left something to be desired. Hoping that remaining jobs get resolved quickly and fairly.

The one or two interactions I ever had with here were entirely pleasant. She was certainly a high energy personality type but I did not find her unpleasant in any way.

She is especially known for her work on M5's and the Leicaflex series of SLR. Think she purchased all the spare M5 parts from Leica USA when they stopped repairs or repairs on the camera, or something like that. She repaired a few M5's and SL's for me, now many years ago, and in the case of the Leicaflex SL further repairs as needed. Expensive but well done work. I haven't had any communication with her in well over a decade, so some time ago.

I’ve only had Sherry do one lens CLA for me. That was in July, 2023. She had it on its way back to me 3 days after she received it.* When she called me to tell me it was done, she spent about an hour on the phone with me talking about her (very interesting) life, the best Leica lenses, etc.

It was an entirely positive interaction, and the lens (a v1 collapsible LTM Summicron with flawless glass) came back good as new.

I’m sad to hear that she’s seemingly MIA. I hope you get your lens back and more importantly that she’s OK.

*She told me not to tell anyone that, because cameras were taking a lot longer, but when she got tired of working on cameras she’d do a few lenses as a change of pace, and she particularly liked my lens.

Well, I guess the situation has changed since my last communication with Jadon. I did in fact had a good report with him, but he's now not responding to my email(s) and I've confirmed with two other sources that he's no longer doing camera repair. It seems he prefers working on cars.

Can’t blame him; I’m not sure I’d have the patience to deal with Leica people and their precious cameras either … 🙄
