Had an opportunity to wander a little around Hong Kong and Kowloon this week on a business trip and was astonished to see just how prevalent Leica is out here. The brand is given equal billing by many camera stores signs along with Canon and Nikon and there are many independent stores selling Leica.

Looking into a handful of them, most that I saw had an M9-P on display as well as a couple of standard M9 and digiluxes. New lenses were much scarcer though I did see 28/2, 35/2, 50/2.5 and 90/2.5s for sale.

There are also more Leica boutiques in HK than I expected - in shopping centres and at the airport too. They were stocking the usual digital p&s, binoculars and M9s as well as accessories. I saw one new MP on display at the airport for the equivalent of £3500.

Comparing prices with UK levels, it seemed as if everything was more expensive here, though the M9 were perhaps a couple of hundred quid less.

Interesting to compare to the UK where Leica dealers are somewhat more scarce.

It's just a culture thing. Leica is valued because it represents wealth and quality and all that jazz, much like owning a Ferrari, it's considered prestigious. Except people can more easily claim they own a Leica than a Ferrari.
It's also why the Chinese/HK market is buying up much of the Leica stock on Ebay etc.
