Reminds me of living in the Philippines years ago, where seemingly every store and even apartment buildings had guards armed with shotguns. Maybe that's where we are headed?

This store robbery in SF is just one of hundreds of similar emboldened attacks that have been happening for the last two years.

This is what has been happening, not just in certain west coast cities but in like-minded cities elsewhere and this is why criminals in those cities know there are no consequences whatsoever for their actions:

- Seattle has lost over 20% of its police force and is unable to fill vacancies. This is because initially there was an outcry to defund the police, which happened, and additionally the police had no support from the mayor or other city officials. Given that they could not do their job without being undermined by the city, police officers have left and recruitment is difficult. Only the most serious crimes get attention. Car theft, break-ins, thefts cannot get the attention they deserve.

- Businesses have been leaving Portland. Just last week one business closed and put a note on the door saying they are leaving Portland because they’ve been robbed five times in the last three weeks; their employees fear for their safety. Broken windows, boarded up storefronts, vandalized shops - it’s been happening in Portland regularly every week since mid-2020. Like Seattle and SF, Portland’s city council and government cannot even comprehend their own policies are the cause of the problem.

In the SF bay area, thefts up to a certain amount ($950?) are essentially ignored. Those arrested are often released the same day. The attacker who pushed a man onto the subway tracks (I forget the city) was released the same day although he has dozens of felonies.

So, it’s not surprising the Leica store got robbed. The people recently had a chance to send a signal to change things; they didn’t do it. These are the consequences of the policies adopted in the last two years and there will be more of it.

I just looked at the SFPD crime stats web site. Robbery is up 6.4% in one year. Assault is up 8.7% and theft and larceny is up 11.8%. Those are not good trends. I just looked up Albuquerque here in my home state of NM and guess what? It is up over last year too. We are going in the wrong direction. We can't allow our society to disintegrate and become lawless like this. We all pay for this in higher insurance costs, higher taxes and loss of quality of life.
