So I picked one up and test shot with it, I've had them before but this time I'll try to keep this one... Since I'm considering marrying it, I want to take care of it, thus some questions....

1. Is there a good alternative lenscap solution? I do not need a collector's piece, just protection.

2. While I actually want some flare for a grungy creative effect, is there a good alternative lenshade? The OEM shade costs more than the lens....

3. The aperture stiffness is sort of progressive and stiff, the detents are faint. Is this adjustable or something a tech can adjust?

4. Who is good with CLA these lenses that won't keep it for half a year?

I suspect this is one of the better built Leica lenses. Am I wrong?

Thanks!

I would call up Sherry Krauter for the CLA. For the aperture, a quick fix might be a small drop of lighter fluid on the ring and just work it a bit.

For a CLA, ask Youxin Ye, or Jerry Sorin (who recently took over from Eddie Smolov, also NY based. Adresses in the Leica CLA technicians thread, a sticky in the LTM or M forum

Ask Brian about that Kodak adapter that changes the 41mm thead to a 40.5, Tiffen made them as well but I cannot recall their name or code.

Just had my Summarit 50 1.5 M mount CLA'd by Steve's Camera center out in Calver City CA, took less the a month including UPS ground shipping each way.

I just use a 41-46mm step-up ring and a generic 46mm lens cap and filters as their a lot easier to find then 41mm ones.
Cost of the step-ring+ generic cap is about $28+S&H through B&H

The Tiffen #611 adapter allows use of Series VI filters and accessories on the Summarit.

ALSO: I wrapped some teflon plumbing tape around 40.5mm filters and hoolds to use them with the Summarit. A 40.5mm clip-in lens cap should work fine.

I used Essex Camera to CLA my two Summarits.

Frank, DAG did my M mount one like new in under 2 months. Some ebay sellers 40.5 filters will filt 41 fine, can't remember the exact vendors, but it wasn't heavystar, or you could go the tape route.

The M mount one I had was very heavy and built well.

I have the lens, and hood and had it cleaned by Sherry but I could not stand the flare of white objects in the photos. They produced a glow that I did not like. Sherry did get rid of the haze but I don't use the lens at all. Maybe it would be better using B&W film but then I don't have yellow filters for it. I should move the lens and hood what is a good price?

Hey, Frank...since I am now officially unvoluntarily retired and broke, I am more than married to my Summarit and quite happy with it!

1. & 2. http://cameraquest.com/frames/4saleLeica.htm

3. & 4. Youxin Ye did a superb job of cleaning mine and I recommend him for a quick CLA

Better built? I dunno. Built great? Absolutely!

Any other questions about photos, etc. , let me know and Leica Tom is also quite experienced with these lenses. Good luck and enjoy!
