Leica Summicron-M 35mm question

Hello, the Leica Summicron-M 35mm (black) has a product / manufacturer number of 11673 (at B&H). Previously I'd seen the current number as 11879 (Black). What are the differences?

Is there a resource (web-site link?) to see the history of the lens, explaining the differences? Thanks in advance....

The previous gen 35 Cron Asph is still a spectacular performer - both on film and digital - I have experienced it on both and have zero complaints.
An argument can be made that these new lenses were introduced not because they were needed, but to kick start sales.
The previous gen silver version was made from brass, while the current black or silver are both anodized alloy.

But if you are in the market for new, why not get the latest?

You can get a perfect condition previous gen used one for under $2k. I have seen several on fredmiranda.com and sometimes on this site's classifieds.
