Leica teases "Mini M"

Mystery...

Intrigue...

The Black Box...

Well, there are two things I know about this camera:

1) It will be at least reasonably cool.

2) (And I know this with absolute unmitigated certainty)
I will not be able to afford this camera.

Well, it certainly won't have a combo VF/RF or there wouldn't have been the need to lump the X2 and D-lux cameras together as a "M" for marketing purposes.

Leica has said in the past that they won't go m4/3 I believe. APS-C or larger.

My guess is that it is:

1) A run of the mill mirrorless camera with EVF and a M mount.
2) A run of the mill mirrorless camera with a small range of proprietary lenses
3) (dream) A fixed lens digital camera with a VF/RF combo... sort of like a Fuji X100 with a manual 35mm Summicron tacked on.

I also cannot imagine it using the M9 sensor at all... no video, no liveview, no high ISO. However, the X series has no video or LV either... so, who knows.

How about this: a revival of the LTM Barnack. No rangefinder, but would have live view LCD, with an attachable EVF. They would also introduce a whole new lineup in LTM lenses. Or at least we can conjecture.

Found it....

Fixed mini summicron and second camera to do rangefinding.

Bessa dial, S2 info screen and central shutter

Why not an M-mount, full frame, focus peaking EVF finder? It could be a LOT cheaper than an M240 (much easier and therefore cheaper to assemble) and a perfect second body/back-up for M-digi users: I'd probably buy one. That's quite apart from those who might want the best mirrorless camera on the market. Sure it wouldn't be cheap but why would Leica want to make a cheap camera?

Amateurs who hide behind made-up names on Internet forums might do well to remember that Leica cares even less for their opinions than they do for people who have a faint idea of what they are talking about. When such people try to tell Leica what "professionals" do and don't do, they should remember that (a) Leica knows a lot more about Leica buyers than they do and (b) Leica doesn't really care who uses their cameras as long as they buy them.

A parallel example might be that Rolls Royce should refuse to sell their cars to footballers. People who buy new cars are a much more important market for car manufacturers than than people who don't. Likewise, people who buy new Leicas are a much more important market than self-appointed and self-important anonymous 'experts' on the Internet.

Cheers,

R.

Dear Joe,

Why on earth would they bother to introduce new LTM lenses? Far easier, surely, to make bodies 1mm thinner than screw-mount so you could use screw-mount AND M-mount.

R.

I am guessing its a micro 4/3 camera too.
Will be interesting to see

But why? Why wouldn't they want to separate themselves from the micro 4/3 market. Why go head to head with olympus and panasonic? Why would they want people happy to use their micro 4/3 lenses rather than leica's lenses. Why wouldn't they want to provide an alternative (FF) that noone else can match, optimised for Leicas glass? Why, when they've a bespoke sensor, would they not choose to use it?

Behold the return of the M8! Seriously - that's product slot they're describing. Or simply an interchangeable-lens X1. Something in that range. Then again, don't think you can call it an "Mini M" if it doesn't have an optical rangefinder.

Pico on the Leica forum posted this. Imagine - Full Frame Barnack

Amen to that!

I second your option 3. They see a market niche that the Fuji x100 and Sony RX1 are in. I remember an interview with their CEO (what ever his name is) a while back suggesting that they want to explore a newer market....

Here's the thing - while it may be a Leica camera (i.e. pure Leica and not a rebadged Panasonic) - as usual, how would Leica be able to meet demand. They can't even meet the demand for the M240 currently and they're going to release an all new, only theirs, Mini-M? I can already hear people complaining now about the low production numbers.. not just for this new model but for the current ones as well.

Cheers,
Dave

Yes, I've been trying to post something along those lines but the forum's server must have some sort of bad language filter.
