Do the 28mm frameline 0.72x magnified bodies (e.g. M6, M4-P) have larger windows than on the M2. I get the impression that they are similarly sized because it seems that the later M's 35mm framelines are closer to 40mm so that they can just squeeze in the 28mm.

I know that there are better 28mm alternatives (hexar rf, ZI, Bessa, 0.58x m6, and maybe a few others) but this i ssomething I've always wondered about.

The M4P, M6 (and forward) 28mm framelines are pretty accurate. You can check visually by "multiplying" the 90mm framelines times 3.

M6 (and forward) 35mm and 50mm framelines are noticably smaller than in previous models to accomodate shorter min. focus (0.7 vs 1m). For example (M2 and M6 50mm):

(note that the above M6 had 75mm lines removed)

Finally, late M2 models have a larger eye piece than early ones. But the magnification is 0.72 on both.

Roland.
