I know its not a rangefinder, but if anyone is interested in joining this flickr group, you'd be more than welcome.

We're making it a valuable resource hub prior to release and of course afterward, we'll be hosting some shots from the camera's 35mm Elmarit f/2.8 lens which has been responsible for some of the most Iconic rangefinder shots in history.

Anyway, everyone is welcome to join or pop along for a visit and I am just wondering: Am I the only rangefinder junkie who's extremely excited about this camera?

I'm really looking forward to seeing some real world test shots but it really is looking good, especially if you consider the prices for the the M-mount 35mm Leica lenses on their own!
 
As another Paul from Greater Manchester, I'll join you. I'm pretty interested in this new camera though I'm gonna have sell my CLE and my Heaxr Silver to boost the funds.

The 35mm Elmarit f/2.8?? I don't think such a beast exists, at least not in M-mount. Can you post some of these iconic shots taken with it? ;) Call me crazy, but I think the X1 has a 24mm Elmarit lens that gives a 35mm equivalent.
 
My explanation was vague, admittedly. I Think it comes out at 36mm after the APS-C crop multiplier. And I've seen some belters from the 35mm. So here's hoping :)

Yes, the 35mm lens on the full frame Leica screw and M mount cameras have taken some famous shouts, but that's not the same as a 24mm lens on an APS-C sensor. The field of view will be the same, but the 24mm's deeper depth of focus and lack of an f/2 aperture will have some subtle effects on some types of shots. But assuming the lens is as sharp as a pre-aspheric 35mm Summicron, it should be capable of creating shots with some classic Leica 35mm attributes.
 
I won't buy one but I bookmarked the group, I want to see the what the images look like. Well, I guess I might buy one for travel, but I would tell my wife it is for her. She will never read the manual so I'll by default be using it. Or I might buy her a K-m (Pentax: $599 US) (but it won't be pink).
 
I'm very interested in this camera, but the price might keep me away. If I got an X1 I would also want the US$375 optical viewfinder, which would make the total cost close to what a used M8 body is going for here. That's a tough decision. I always said I would buy a camera like the X1 if it cost a good bit less than what I could get a digital M for. With the prices between an new X1 w/ finder on par with a used M8 it may come down to a coin toss. I suspect a lot of film Leica M users who have been waiting for an economical digital solution will be faced with the same dilemma.

I have seen the X1 in action and can only say that with the optical viewfinder it looks damn good ;)

But when I come to think of it - I am wondering how large (or small) a camera could/could be if there would be a (effective) 24-50/2.8 (or similar, but f/2.8) lens packed on top of an APS-C sized chip ... a great P&S to accompany a MF RF camera :p
