They are both d*mn good camera's, but to compare? I doubt that there are many that have both...

Check out luminous-landsacpe.com they have reviews of both the digilux 2 and the RD-1 (by sean reid).

The RD-1 is a totally different beast - real optical RF, bigger sensor, better noise control, interchangeable lenses etc etc - you really can't compare them. The quality control on the leica is probably better though :(

PS. A very warm welcome to RFF

But the Digilux2 is probably the best small-sensor camera out there. To get the same quality of glass on the RD1 will set you back a considerable number of $$$$

No argument here. The digilux has a very nice lens included :)

I want to get together M and digital. I have sold all Rs and R-lenses I have had. I have bought a M6 with a 1,4/35 and now I'm thinking to unifie analog and digital. M8 is to expensive so I'M thinking if I could change my D2 for an Epson R-D1. D2 is a very fine camera. But very noisy at 400 Iso, and more ... the D2 hasn't. Could someone mail me a foto of high Iso made by Epson?

There is no doubt the quality of the R-D1s is awesome, especailly at high ISO. The new s version outstrips the original by a long shot. I've shot at 1600 and it looks like 200 EI. I will try and send you a file later. Better get one soon there is a limited number left (Robert White in the UK) and the M8 is getting all the buzz now.

Hi abumac,
I never shot the Digilux 2 but was in the same situation about a month ago.....I needed to chose beteween the two. I chose the R-D1 and couldn't be happier with my choice. The viewfinder, and the lack of shutter lag were the main reasons. This is a real rangefinder where you will have a lot of lens choices. Again I can't compare it with the Digilux 2 but I weighed pros and cons, analyzed very carefully in regards to my shooting style and past experience with cameras....

If you're a rangefinder purist who wants a bright clear 1:1 finder as well as having the choice of different lenses then the R-D1 is for you. The black and white features on the R-D1 are excellent with the choice of 5 filter modes as well as 3 film modes to get the look you want..

By the way ISO 1600 is excellent, send me you e-mail and I will send you a photo

I've owned a lot of cameras and this is definitely my favorite. (I prefer film and the look of film but don't have time to process these days) I get pretty close to the look of film with the R-D1..

Gook Luck

I sold my Digilux 2 to make way for an R-D1. I do miss the D2 but I prefer the R-D1.

Variety of lenses, quality at high ISO and the general speed of use (Raw buffer included). But the biggest factor for me was that manual focus on the Digilux was sometimes unreliable and the auto focus can be slow. Moreover, the EVF just wasn't to my liking.

Using the R-D1 is a joy. I also love the experience of taking pictures with the R-D1 (even if I don't like the end results...but thats my lack of skill). The Digilux can be fun to use but I also found it led to some frustrations (for the reasons listed above).

Having said all of that I do miss the digilux for its zoom lens (which I tended to use at the extremes). Also, that lens is capable of truly great results.

But, I now tend to take my R-D1 with a single lens (rarely I may take another with me) and the Leica D2 (rather than digilux2) and that, to me, is a great fall back for when I want some zoom etc.

I have both cameras and still use both. RD1 is a real rangefinder with all the pleasure that comes with it (viewfinder, focus, interchangeable lenses, ...) and the Digilux2 gives me zoom and a often useful sound-of-silence when shooting.

I have the Digilux 2. It has amazing glass, and a great meter. I've gotten use to the EVF, but I don't like the shutter lag at all. I've gotten to the point where I think of it almost as a dedicated 100 ISO portrait or landscape camera. It really is a top tier digital point and shoot. IMO, the glass alone is worth the price of the camera--especially the used prices. It's really not fair to compare it to the RD-1, though. IMO it's a no-brainer. If I had to chose between the two, I'd go with the RD-1. :)

I also have both cameras. The Digilux has much more noise at higher ISO levels and a slight lag time but for a carry around- leave in the car all the time- just in case camera it cant be beat. And right now you can pick them up for next to nothing on ebay ( at least the panasonic version which is just as good, I have one of those as well). The RD-1 is very definitely able to record a higher quality image and just feels like a real camera! This is not really an issue , I guess, except for those of us over 50. Plus nearly any lens you can buy for it will work on a myraid of film cameras and the camera in everyones future/dreams the M8!

Here is my two cents worth:

I have the RD1s and a Nikon 5400. I intend to keep. I know the Digilux is expensive and keeping both RD1 and the Lux may not be feasible. But, my Nikon takes macros that a rangefinder never will. Also, if I try to sell the nikon, I may not get much back, so I might as well keep it. The same argument may apply to your situation.

Overall, the RD1 handles ISO much better than a PS camera. I have compared images from my nikon with the RD1, and at identical settings for aperture/exposure/ISO, the RD1 wins hands down.

Good luck!

Thank you to all. Now I have read the thread about problems with the R-D1. So i don't now wether to change my Digilux 2 or not. I want a well working camera and the R-D1 doesn't seems to be one.

I just received my R-D1 last week and sold my DMC-LC1 this weekend. After taking about 100 pictures with the R-D1 I don't regret the switch one bit.
The R-D1 is so much more comfortable in use. I didn't mind the EVF when I had the LC1, but now that I see though a real viewfinder again I don't know how I put up with it. The viewfinder isn't just good, it's great. As good as my M3 and M6 were (going by memory).
The buffer on the R-D1 is not huge, but it's useable and I doubt I will miss many shots due to a full buffer. With the LC1, I lost dozens of shots during the 6-Mississippi countdown.
The R-D1 picture quality is also much better. It's not the 1 megapixel jump that matters. It's the shadow detail, lower noise and over "look" (sorry, I'm not a pixel peeper so I don't know the technical terms to describe the difference).
Because of the R-D1 quality problems, I would avoid evil-bay and any other place you're not sure of. I ordered a mint one from Photo village. They assured me the rangefinder was fine (and it is) and will adjust it for free for 90 days.
By the way, the Digilux 2/DMC-LC1 are far from reliable cameras in my experience. I've owned two and both failed. The first had a problem where the aperture wouldn't stop down and the sensor went on the second. The sensor failure is not a rare problems from what I can tell.
I say go for it

Chris.
