I understand there are earlier and later versions of this lens. How to tell the difference between the versions? Anyone know?

Hi,
Afaik there are two major versions. One is called Focotar and the second is called Focotar-2. The name is on the barrel. The v.1 is quit common the v.2 is said to be much better and is quit rare. Therefore v.2 is much more expensive.
I use a Componon-S 50/2.8 and is as sharp as I could wish for a fraction of the price of the focotar-2.
Cheers,

There is a middle version identified by a large front element, almost double size, but still 4.5. It is a fabulous lens. Focotar 2 is also superb.
The middle version is better at 4.5 and 5.6 by a fair margin due to field curvature. The 2 is marginally better than the middle at 8 / 11.
Avoid the original if at all possible unless you make 5x7 prints.
