For the first time in decades, I decided to watch the start of Lemans this morning. OMG, how boring! I see more of the same everyday on the Interstate just a mile from my house.
I am jaded, I know. Having grown up in the sixties watching the classic cars on a classic track in the days when even the track had character, let alone the cars!
It was the same era that I cut my teeth on NASCAR. In high school, we all salivated over the Ford and Chevy of our choice in the showroom every Monday after watching the production-based cars dueling on Sunday! Glorious day! Bragging rights and product identification even if the race tracks were ugly! Stuff that hormone-stuffed teenagers thrived on!
I haven't watched a NASCAR race since the 80s. Nothing is production based and the tracks are so sterile, I might as well sit out on I-285 at rush hour. Boring.
LeMans has changed from a beautiful tree-lined small track with an amazing straight and death-defying drivers hurling around an impossible track, to yet another "safe" track with prototypes throttled down to encourage "efficiency" and "safety". Ferrari GTOs were a sight to behold...which no prototype can come close to matching, everything looks the same outside of the ugly delta-wing car.
Boring stuff. At least with the Ford GT40s and Porsches were running, the track had character and you would see Austin Healeys, MGs, Jaguars and the like in different classes. It is so sophisticated now as to be just a vanilla flavored version of Rocky Road.😛
