Lens Board for Super Speed Graphic...

Need some schooling on lens boards.

I have a Super Speed Graphic and I just scored a Nikon Nikkor W Nikkor W 210mm of the auction site. I need a lens board now.

What is the hole size? 39mm right? So I need a lens board with a 39mm whole. I see boards listed as copal 0, 1,2.

Is a Copal 1 39mm?

Copal #1 needs a 41.6mm hole (1 5/8 inch or thereabouts).

Thanks Chris! Just what I needed.

Next ridiculous question: So I know the hole size now. Need to find boards for copal1 because that is the lens I just bought on flea-bay. But- does the board have to be specifically for a Super Speed Graphic or are board sizes standard?

The early 4x5 Graphics use different lens boards than the Pacemaker and later models. The Super Graphic boards were a further iteration of the Pacemaker board. Since you likely won't be using the solenoid or flash with that lens, you can use a Pacemaker Graphic board. It will be easier and cheaper that way. You might need to shim the board lock to make it tight... depending on the quaity of the board. There are both old and new boards available on ebay. And of couse you know about KEH and Midwest.

Carterofmars--Maybe you already know this, but be careful buying a lens board for a Super Graphic. A Pacemaker only lens board will not work well. A Super/Pacemaker lens board has two large bumps on each side and two tiny bumps top and bottom. A Pacemaker board only has the tiny bumps top and bottom. The large side bumps are needed to properly secure the board to a Super body. As Gumby said, you can shim the Pacemaker board--but what a pain.

The large side bumps are needed to properly secure the board to a Super body. As Gumby said, you can shim the Pacemaker board--but what a pain.

A couple of thin pieces of foam material, like that used for light seals, under the two sides does the job with a minimum of effort.

The Super Graphic and Super Speed Graphics use a special board with an internal linkage that is actuated by a solenoid in the bottom of the front frame.

The red button on the side of both models (only difference on a Super Speed is the Rodenstock lens with the 1/1000 shutter-big chrome cocking ring in front looks like a hood) is that the red button is wired with ribbon wiring folded internally through the bellows to the front frame. The solenoid in the front frame, then actuates an internal linkage INSIDE the lens board that goes up to a linkage that then comes out through the front of the lens board and trips the shutter.

Without that style lens board, I think the red button release is useless. It's a complete internal system. The batteries and battery door cover are still available. Last time I got a cover for the batteries and two batteries I think I got them from Midwest.

And, the post about the bumps on the front of the lens board is correct since the retainers for the Supers slide out from the sides of the front frame opening and cinch the lens board down tight. The Super lens board is layered two metal panels for enclosing the internal linkage to use the red button-solenoid shutter release.

If you can find the proper lens board, I'd say you're looking at $50 to $100 for that board. A very specific item.

I've sold all of my Super specific lens boards, since I don't do rangefinder/handheld with 4X5. You can shim other boards for the side grips to take care of the board being tight in the hole.
