Lens case?

I'd like to use a bag w/o padding, how could I protect 1-2 lenses? I plan on just having them in the bag loosely. The lowepro lens cases I've seen so far were way, way too large for the lenses I use. It should fit the 50mm 'Lux and smaller lenses. The Leica leather pouch is ridiculously oversized to carry around.

Anyway, I have two. One fits my 50/35 cron just fine. The other can fit a M body with no lens. The pouch seems to be lined with some sort of nylon and is padded. Not rigid like the newer leather cases.

I use an old arm surplus bag that has no padding but it does have some cloth dividers that help to keep some internal order. The camera resides in one divider and lenses in another. I keep most lenses in relatively slim neoprene soft drink can holders. They are not as tall as a can and work very well for rangefinder lenses, and that includes leaving the hoods in place. The ones I use were freebies, but should be fairly easy to find. For my small CV21 lens I use a padded zipped pouch that my laptop mouse came with. The worst lens cases I have are, ironically, *real* lens cases (came with new lenses).

I use Hasselblad, Leica, and Hexanon leather lens bags depending on the size of the lens.

Aside the protection offered by leather lens bags, removing and returning lenses is fast, no zipper, no fumbling, and they are very light.

I bought a couple of these leather lens bags myself. As you said, they are lined with nylon, and they have a nice, easy to open/close drawstring. About $10 each, I believe. They don't take up much room, and fit my 35 cron and 50 lux very well.

It is not wise to let unprotected lenses float around in a bag. For RFDR lenses I've had several simple leather cases made in the last few years by the neighbourhood cobbler.

I envy anybody who has a neighborhood cobbler these days! My old friend Carl had a stroke a few years ago and has been in a nursing home ever since. He fixed a number of cases for me over the years, but no more!

Al, in nearly every neighbourhood in India there will be a neighbourhood cobbler. You'll also get bidis without having to pay the extortionate shipping costs. Plus you'll have someone at hand to tell you that the Macro Lumitar 63/1.1 was a Taylor-Hobson design and not a Schneider one.

I can't wait to try out that Macro Lumitar on the Leica M3.2X with the factory 60mm frame lines. Thanks, Mukul! It's simply amazing that these rare one-of-a-kind items were still packed in silica gel in rough hewn teak crates in the back of that Dehli warehouse for more than half a century. Even more amazing that you happened to be there as it was being tossed in the trash! Good going!

A plastic jar with a screw on cap and some foam cut to fit the jar, and cut out to take the lens. Or some bubble-wrap glued on the bottom and around the sides. Cheap, works.

I started with neoprene cozies, but then found that a good solution is a neoprene PET bottle cover. These go for about a dollar and protect well, with a drawstring. look for them in cheap shops.

I also favor drawstring bags for this purpose, but I think vinyl is a better idea than leather, which can retain moisture and promote the growth of fungus. I had a Hasselblad leather bag that started to disintegrate. The surface started peeling away. I have a Vivitar plastic drawstring bag that is holding up well.

I use one of these mesh cases from Muji. The small one fits my 28mm Elmarit-M ASPH, my 50mm Summilux ASPH just fine, or my 35mm Summilux-M ASPH without the hood. The medium fits the 35 'Lux with hood.

I wish Leica would provide practical cases like these, or the leatherette drawtring pouches Konica provided with the M-Hexanons, instead of the useless leather monstrosities they include with their lenses.

I actually bought the Muji medium mesh case some time ago, for earphones though. I don't think they'd protect free floating lenses sufficiently.
